Music – Teaching & Assessment
Intermediate Phase
• Warm-up & play
o Do warm-up to prevent injuries.
o Encourages focus & experience specific subject-related concepts.
o Enhance skills through fun.
o Breathing exercises, vocal warm-up, focus games.
o Example: Musical Simon says, Singing.
• Improvise & create
o Musical Simon says.
o Develop ability to keep steady beat.
o Respond to dif. tone intensity levels.
o Improvise & create short musical phrases.
o Singing a chant song.
• Read, interpret & perform
o Read rhythm patterns using speech patterns.
o Read notation using tonic solfa.
• Appreciate & reflect
o Use graphic scores & listening maps.
o Enhance focus on main concepts.
o Develop music literacy skills.
o Appreciate musical instruments using resources available on the internet.
Senior Phase
• Complex ideas taught at simplified level.
• Then revisited each time @ a more complex level.
• Majority concepts already introduced in previous 2 phases.
• Disciplines no longer taught in integrated manner.
• Taught in independent manner & focused manner.
• Topics don’t have to be taught in order.
• Keep on following Hear->Do->See->Create principle can be approached as follows:
o Listen to recording & discuss elements & how they contribute to mood (HEAR).
o Teach learners to sing song (DO).
o Give learners sheet of music. Sing song while reading notation (DO & SEE).
o Study note values & use sheet music to test knowledge, compose & note rhythm
(SEE & CREATE).
o Use baseline from song to improvise dif. piece of music (CREATE).
