, Option 1: Overcrowded Classrooms.
In recent years, South Africa has grappled with the persistent challenge of overcrowded
classrooms, which has significantly hindered effective teaching and learning in educational
institutions. As stated by Khumalo and Mji (2014) and Marshall and Rossman (2006), the
detrimental effects of overcrowding on discipline management and academic achievement in
educational settings are well-documented. Overcrowded classrooms not only strain physical
resources but also create an environment where it becomes increasingly difficult for educators
to maintain discipline and facilitate meaningful learning experiences. The implications of this
issue are far-reaching, impacting not only the immediate educational outcomes of students but
also their long-term prospects and the overall quality of the education system.
Given the urgency and complexity of this challenge, there is a critical need to delve deeper into
the experiences of those most directly affected by overcrowded classrooms – the student
teachers. These individuals, poised on the cusp of entering the teaching profession, represent a
valuable source of insight into the practical realities of classroom management and
instructional delivery in overcrowded settings. exploring their perspectives, this research seeks
to uncover the subtle ways in which classroom overcrowding shapes the teaching and learning
process, as well as the strategies employed by student teachers to navigate these challenges.
3. Problem statement (half a page)
The issue of overcrowded classrooms in South Africa has emerged as a pressing concern in
recent years, capturing the attention of educators, policymakers, and researchers alike (SABC,
2013). With classrooms accommodating more students than they were designed for, the scope
of the problem is widespread, affecting schools across urban and rural areas. This issue not only
strains physical resources but also undermines the quality of teaching and learning experiences
for both educators and learners
The seriousness of the problem is underscored by its impact on discipline management,
academic achievement, and overall educational outcomes. In overcrowded classrooms,
educators face challenges in maintaining order, delivering effective instruction, and meeting
the diverse needs of their learners (Khumalo & Mji, 2014). As a result, there is a growing
recognition of the need for targeted interventions to address the root causes of overcrowding
and mitigate its negative effects.
On top of that, the research question driving this study is: "How can implementing innovative
classroom management strategies help to improve discipline management and academic
achievement in overcrowded classrooms?" And how focusing on proactive measures to address
the challenges posed by overcrowding, such as the implementation of differentiated
instruction, collaborative learning techniques, and supportive classroom environments, this
research aims to identify practical solutions to enhance the teaching and learning process in
overcrowded settings. And using the potential of innovative classroom management strategies
to alleviate the impact of overcrowding, this study seeks to contribute to the development of
