, INVESTIGATING THE REPLICATION CRISIS 2
Abstract
The replication crisis has led to doubt concerning the reliability of psychological
research. To investigate to what extent this is a valid concern, this study’s research question is
whether the results of the study by Glanzer and Cunitz (1966) can be reproduced by the first-year
psychology workgroups of the Vrije Universiteit. A free recall task with an immediate recall
condition and a delayed recall condition was conducted in class. The results showed a different
outcome than the results found by Glanzer and Cunitz (1966); there was no recency effect in
either of the conditions. The difference in results, however, does not necessarily mean that the
study was not reliable. The difference in results most likely occurred because this study didn’t
include practice rounds and the participants weren’t alone while performing the free recall task.
