Supporting Learners with Physical Disabilities in Mainstream Classroom
INTRODUCTION
Inclusive education is a fundamental right for all learners, regardless of their abilities.
However, learners with physical disabilities often face significant barriers to accessing
quality education. This action research aims to explore and develop strategies for
supporting learners with physical disabilities in mainstream classrooms, promoting
inclusive education and equal opportunities for all students. The study will focus on
identifying effective support mechanisms, teacher training programs, and resource
allocation to create an inclusive learning environment. Additionally, the study will
examine the impact of inclusive education on academic outcomes, social skills, and
self-esteem for learners with physical disabilities.
PROBLEM STATEMENT
Learners with physical disabilities face numerous challenges in accessing quality
education, which can have long-term consequences on their academic, social, and
emotional development. One of the primary challenges is inadequate infrastructure,
including inaccessible classrooms, lack of ramps, and inadequate adaptive technology.
This can hinder their participation in learning and limit their access to educational
resources.
Furthermore, learners with physical disabilities often experience negative attitudes and
stigma towards disability among teachers and peers. This can lead to social isolation,
low self-esteem, and a lack of confidence, which can further exacerbate their exclusion
from education. The lack of representation and role models can also limit their
aspirations and opportunities, perpetuating a cycle of exclusion and marginalization.
In addition, learners with physical disabilities often face barriers in accessing curriculum
materials and resources. This can include a lack of accessible digital materials,
inadequate accommodations for assessments, and limited opportunities for
extracurricular activities. This can limit their ability to fully participate in the learning
