Education

Introduction

The concept of decolonisation in education has gained significant attention and importance
in recent years. It advocates for the reconstruction of pre-colonial traditional, indigenous
lifestyles and recognizes different world outlooks that co-exist with the Eurocentric
worldview. This essay aims to engage and evaluate the view that decolonisation promotes
the inclusion of Afro-centric perspectives in the study and sphere of philosophy of

Decolonisation and Africanisation in Education: A Focus on Social Justice
Education

Introduction

The concept of decolonisation in education has gained significant attention and
importance in recent years. It advocates for the reconstruction of pre-colonial
traditional, indigenous lifestyles and recognizes different world outlooks that co-exist
with the Eurocentric worldview. This essay aims to engage and evaluate the view that

sphere of philosophy of education. Specifically, it will focus on the theme of social
justice education and analyze the contemporary and philosophical debates around
decolonisation in relation to this topic. Furthermore, this essay will evaluate the
historical trajectory of teacher education in Africa, with a particular focus on South
Africa, in terms of the progress made towards positioning Afro-centric perspectives
more positively in the philosophy of education.

Decolonisation and Africanisation in Education

The concept of decolonisation in education stems from the recognition of the need to
challenge and deconstruct the dominant Eurocentric narratives that have historically
marginalized and excluded indigenous knowledge systems and perspectives.
Decolonisation advocates for the recognition and affirmation of diverse knowledge
systems, traditions, and worldviews, particularly those that have been historically
suppressed under colonial rule. In the context of education, decolonisation seeks to
reframe the curriculum, pedagogy, and institutional practices to reflect a more inclusive
and equitable representation of different cultural and epistemic traditions.

The promotion of Africanisation in education aligns with the goals of decolonisation,
as it aims to center African perspectives, knowledge, and experiences in the
educational landscape. Africanisation seeks to challenge the hegemony of Western
epistemologies and ideologies in education, particularly in post-colonial societies
