Which of these job areas and positions do you relate to the most?
I study Mental health counseling, a branch of psychology specializing in addiction.
Mental health counseling offers a specialized type of care that is focused on helping people with
mental health disorders. This care can include counseling, therapy, and support groups. Mental
health counseling also focuses on addiction treatment. This specialization can help better
understand and provide help for people struggling with addiction. As a mental health counselor, I
may work with clients in various settings, including homes, clinics, schools, and workplaces.
Beneficial Strategies that Would Help in Preparing for a Mental Health Counseling
Profession
A few key strategies will help me prepare for a career in mental health counseling.
Firstly, getting a degree in psychology or a related field is essential. This will give me the
necessary knowledge and skills to work with clients. Secondly, getting experience working with
clients in various settings other than mental health facilities is beneficial. Furthermore, it is
essential to have a strong understanding of mental health and its effects on daily life.
Short-term and Long-term strategies and Their Subsequent Evaluation
I can employ the S-M-A-R-T strategy to develop a meticulous breakdown of the goals I
intend to achieve into long-term and short-term goals, making it easier to track and evaluate my
progress towards achieving the objectives. Since the ultimate goal is to successfully carve a
niche in the mental health counseling profession, specifically with a concentration on addiction,
the short-term goal should be to consistently engage in activities that build my knowledge and
character to achieve the greater goal. Such activities include attending seminars and workshops
and volunteering at the local rehabilitation centers. My achievements will be measured by
receiving recommendations from the directors of various rehabilitation centers, graduating and
beginning my professional journey in the mental health counseling field.
