Chapter 1: Developing the self in society

Stress
• What is stress?
What we experience in situations that are experienced as
difficult, challenging, and sometimes frightening. That's
when we feel we can't handle a situation.

• What is good stress?
Stress that gets you ready for action gives you adrenaline and energy. E.g. When
you stand at the front of the class and talk. It is for a short time and you may
experience sweaty hands and drÿ mouth or butterflies on your stomach.

• What is bad stress?
If stress is more than you can handle, it is unhealthy. You may become sick unhappy
or depressed. You are not able to do your tasks as best you can. You will get
headaches or not be able to sleep.

• What is a stressor?
A stressor is anything, an event or a person that causes stress. It is
things that trigger stress.

• Symptoms of stress:

o Short-term effects/consequences: Rapid breathing, rapid
heartbeat/dry mouth, sweaty hands/neck tension/butterflies on your
stomach
o Long term effects/effects: High blood pressure, headaches,
ulcers, allergies, etc.

• Type of stressor:

o Physical: caused by physical injury, sexual abuse, due to violence.
o Environment: caused by factors such as extreme weather or pollution .
o Personality: Some people are more prone to stress than others
o Social: caused by people around you, peer pressure
o Emotional: triggered by your emotions, e. problems in relationships

• What is important to manage stress?

o Body Produces Stress Hormones- Cortisol and Adrenaline

▪ Cortisol is the hormone that is produced during fear and
manifests itself in anxiety.
▪ Adrenaline is the hormone that prepares the body to
physically respond to danger / threat.
▪ If you do not manage stress, your body can produce too many
of these hormones. The stress then damages your body and
turns into chronic diseases such as high blood pressure.



• Factors that can lead to stress in the workplace:

• Poor management or poor planning by managers.
• Jealousy
• Tasks that are demanding
• Too little staff
• Poor benefits
• Low salaries

• How to manage stress: Behavioural techniques, strategy and examples of
which way stress can be managed.

• Meditation -natural way to relieve stress
• Exercise and healthy foods.
• Avoid high caffeine intake
• Do not use illegal drugs, alcohol and tobacco.
• Learn to feel good about doing a good job rather than perfectionism
to be expected of yourself and others.
• Take a break from stressful situations.
• Build a network of friends who will help you reduce stress in a positive way
to handle.
• A stress journal can help you identify frequent stressors in your life
be able to spot and identify patterns.
• Analyze your stress:


• What causes you stress?
o How do you feel physically and emotionally?
o How do you respond?
What did you do to make yourself feel better?
o Not all stress can be avoided and it is not healthy to enter a situation
avoid what needs to be addressed.
o Know your limit and stick to it. Whether it's in your personal or
professional life
o Avoid people who make you stress; change the relationship that
causes you stress..

The signs and symptoms of stress


• Short-term consequences: Rapid breathing, rapid heartbeat/drÿ
mouth, sweaty hands/neck tension/butterflies on your stomach
• Long-term consequences: High blood pressure, headaches, ulcers, allergies̈ , etc.
• Positive stress can include signs such as a slight change in appetite
and sleep habits, a slight feeling of anxiety, faster heartbeat and more
alertness and energy.
When stress becomes negative, you experience symptoms such as.
• Psychological: Depression, mood swings, poor judgment
• Physical: Headaches, tight muscles, diarrhea, or constipation
