International Humanitarian Law:
- The protection of human rights during armed con ict]
- Prohibition of attacks on civilians and civilian objects
- Only combatants and military objectives may be attacked
- Prohibition on causing ‘unnecessary’ su ering
International Criminal Law:

- War Crimes Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia

International Criminal Court (1998)
Examples of war Crimes:
- Wilful Killing, Torture/inhuman treatment, Hostages, Rape
- Crimes against Humanity: Crimes committed as part of a widespread or
systematic attack directed against any civilian population, with knowledge of the
attack (e.g. murder, enslavement or torture)
- Genocide: Crime committed with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national,
ethnical, racial or religious group, as such; Killing members of the group, Forcibly
transferring children of the group to another group or causing serious bodily or
mental harm to members of the group.
