1. Define “colonialism” in your own words. (2)
Colonialism is a system in which a dominant power extends its control over territories,
economies, and peoples beyond its borders for the purpose of exploitation, resource
extraction, and cultural assimilation. It involves the imposition of political, economic, and
social structures that prioritize the interests of the colonizing power while subjugating and
marginalizing indigenous populations. Colonialism often involves the displacement or
suppression of local cultures, languages, and traditions, as well as the extraction of natural
resources for the benefit of the colonizers.
One example of colonialism is the European colonization of Africa during the 19th and early
20th centuries, where European powers imposed their control over African territories,
exploited their resources, and imposed their cultural norms and systems of governance onto
indigenous populations.
