ASSIGNMENT 2
UNITS 3 & 4
DUE DATE: 04 June 2024
Section A: Content-Based Questions
1.Read Text A below and answer the questions that follow.
1.1 Refer to paragraph 1.
(a) Identify the modal verb used in paragraph 1 and explain its purpose in the context of the text.
The modal verb used in paragraph 1 is "can". The purpose of the modal verb "can" is to express the
ability or possibility of something happening. In this context, it is used to convey the idea that
education has the power to enable individuals from different backgrounds to achieve success and
make a positive impact on the world.
(b) There is always a relationship between tone and purpose. Mention the tone used in
paragraph 1 and provide a reason why (purpose) the speaker had to use this tone. Support your
answer by citing an example from the text to substantiate your response. Pay careful attention
to the correct use of language.
The tone used in paragraph 1 is inspirational and motivational. The speaker uses this tone to align
with the purpose of encouraging the university community to embrace the mission of "Change the
World" and to emphasize the power of education in bringing about positive change. An example of
this tone can be seen in the quote from Nelson Mandela about education being the most powerful
weapon to change the world, which serves to inspire and motivate the readers to embrace the
university's mission.
(c) Identify a proper noun used in paragraph 1 and support your answer by explaining why you
think this is a proper noun
The proper noun used in paragraph 1 is "Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University." This is a proper
noun because it is the specific name of the university, referring to a particular institution and not just
any university.
1.2 Refer to paragraph 2. The underlined word is formed from the root ‘equal’. Discuss the
changes that occurred
The word "inequalities" is formed from the root "equal" by adding the prefix "in-" and the suffix "-
ities". The addition of the prefix "in-" changes the meaning of "equal" to "not equal" or "lacking
equality", while the suffix "-ities" turns the adjective "unequal" into a noun referring to the state of
being unequal. This reflects the focus on rectifying and addressing the lack of equality and social
justice in the world, as mentioned in the paragraph.
