Lesson 3: Heart and Cardiovascular system
- The heart is places in the middle of the thoracic cavity
- In between the 2 pleural cavities is the mediastinum (where the heart is)
- In the posterior mediastinum are important blood vessels
- Below the heart is the sternum
- Heart sits on top of the diaphragm
- Heart is surrounded by the pericardium:
1. Serious:
a) Visceral - epicardium (outer layer of the heart)
b) Parietal
2. Fibrous - strong layer of connective tissue attached to diaphragm and sternum.
Pericardium - A sac that surrounds the heart
Functions:
- Lubrication for smooth movement
- Heart position
- Protective layer
- Prevent overfilling
Blood flow through heart
- Double pump
- Oxygenated is left
- Deoxy is right
Atrioventricular valve
- Flexible leaflets
- 3 on each side
- Papillary muscles contract

Fossa ovalis - in foetus are open to allow blood to bypass the lungs to go from right to left
