COGNTIVE APPROACH ESSAY WELL EXPLAINED LATEST UPDATE 2024 GRADED A+ Introduction The cognitive approach focuses on how mental processes affect behaviour. It argues that mental processes can and should be studied scientifically. Behaviour is influenced by thoughts that are both conscious and unconscious. Models Models can be used to provide testable theories about mental processes and these can be studied scietifically. The mind is compared to a computer by suggesting there are similarities in the way infomation is processed. These models use the concepts of the central processing unit (the brain) the concept of coding (to turn information into a useable format and the use of "stores to hold information" For example the multi store model of memory by Atkinson and Shiffrin (1968). Schema Schema are packages of information that are developed through experience. Schema act as a mental framework for the interpretation of incoming infomation. Cognitive neuroscience Cognitive neuroscience is the scientific study of the influence of brain structures on mental processes. It is only in the last 20 years that scientists have been able to systematically observe and describe the neurological basis of mental processes. Scanning techniques have been useful in establishing the neurological basis of some mental conditions. Scanning techniques such as fMRI and PET scan produce highly reliable data.
