1. Dictated:
I will first explain the meaning to the class: Dictated means to make (something) necessary.
Then I will explain the word in context: I will explain to the class that it is very cold in the Arctc regions. It
even snows in the summer. The people who live in the Arctc always wear warm, furry clothes for example
to keep them warm during the cold and they cannot grow farm produce such as corn over there again
because of the weather. In other words, what the Inuit eats, what they wear and how they live all depends
on the weather conditons. Thus, how they live is dictated by the weather and cold climates.
Now I will explain the form and pronunciation of the word: Dictated is a transitive verb, a verb
which are followed by an object-the climate of the frozen landscape (The TEFL Academy, Unit4)
and the pronunciation is /dɪkˈteɪtɪd/ with the stress on the first of 2 syllables - Oo.

I will then explain to them that there are some other things to keep in mind: Dictate have diferent
meanings depending on the context. In this case/ example the word is NOT about someone imposing their
will or ordering people around. I will also note to the students that the word dictated is simple past tense.
To check student understanding I will ask them the following concept questons (The TEFL Academy, Unit 2)
that they need to answer with a YES/NO:
1. Is the weather very cold in the Arctcc YES.
2. Do they wear warm, thick clothes to keep warmc YES.
3. Can they farm things like corn in the Arctcc NO.
4. Is it because of the cold climate that they wear warm clothes and cannot farm therec YES.
I will then explain: Thus, the cold climate dictate how the Inuit live their lives.
I will then use the technique elicitatng (The TEFL Academy, Unit2) afer I explained the above and ask the
class if they can give me another word for dictated in this context. The answer I will be looking for here is
‘controlled’.
Lastly I will ask the class to note down the new word in their vocabulary books so that they don’t forget the
word.
Next we will look at the word setlement.
2. Setlement:
I will first use the technique of elicitatng and tell the students that Point sope is a small village where the
Inuit people live and no one lived there before them. Then I will ask if anyone knows another word that we
can call this small village where a group of people livec If they give me the synonym ‘community’ I will
explain to them that this is almost correct but the word I am looking for is ‘setlement’.
I will explain the meaning to the class: It is a place where people live, where no one lived before.
I will tell the class that the form of the word is a countable noun, nouns that can take a plural
form (The TEFL Academy, Unit 4) and the pronunciation is /'setəlmənt/. The stress is on the first of 3
syllables - Ooo.

Then I will explain the word in context: I will explain to the class that the Inuit people lived in Central Asia
long ago. They then decided to move to the Arctc regions in North America. They moved to a small village
named Point sope. So in other words, they setled in Point sope and live there now in a small village. I will
also explain that no one lived in Point sope before the Inuit, thus, Point sope is a setlement where the
