2. [5 to 11] How does the writer use language to describe the mountain area?

Mosse describes the mountain area as picturesque and idyllic which can be seen
through the use of the personification, “In the spring, delicate flowers of pink and
mauve and white peep out from their hiding places.” The imagery creates a picture in
the readers’ heads as it makes the readers imagine the alluring landscape with the
bright colours of the flowers. The adjective “delicate” suggests emphaises the
elegance of the flowers which makes the readers associate the mountain area with a
heaven-like place. The frailness of the flowers is reinforced through the verb “peep”
which shows that the flowers are vulnerable and fragile which contrasts with the
positive imagery as this creates a sense of danger as the flowers are horrified by
something which caused them to hide. On the other hand, this could also mean that
the flowers were sheltering themselves from the harsh weather and are now coming
out from “hiding” because of the perfect weather.

In addition, Mosse also uses adjectives to describe the mountain area in the early
summer as lively and joyful which can be seen through the lines, “In the early
summer, the pastures are green and speckled with yellow buttercups.” This nature
imagery helps the readers to understand the beauty of the mountain area which can
be seen through the use of the adjective “speckled” which emphaises the number of
flowers. This shows that the mountain area was exquisite as it was covered in many
flowers. Furthermore, the adjective “yellow” symbolises happiness and joy which
helps paint the mountain area as ideal and flawless. However, the adjective “yellow”
can also indicate danger which reinforces the subtle idea of danger and
deceitfulness associated with the mountain area.

Moreover, Mosse contrasts the idea of the mountain area being seraphic and perfect
to it being tenebrous and deceitful which can be seen through the personification,
“But now, the sun has flattened the land into submission, turning the greens to
brown.” This suggests that the sun acts as an enemy which destroys the mountain
area perhaps a metaphor for how hot the place is. The violent verb “flattened”
emphasises the ruthlessness of the sun as it is demolishing the mountain area
