Introduction The beginning of intermodalism stages shows us that there has been competition between different modes which produced un-integrated and separate transport systems. Intermodal is defined as the movement of a container or trailer by one or more modes in any combination of utilizing vehicles, freight and ocean vessels. There was minimal communication between the modes causing a disruption in the transportation business. As a result, the carriers that operated the various modes looked out for their own interest by exploiting its own advantages through cost, service, safety, reliability and technology. This became a costly endeavor as businesses burned through money trying to stay afloat. The lack of integration and loop holes in federal regulations caused for a change in the transportation realm. Historical data shows that since the 1960s, ‘major efforts have been made to integrate separate transport systems through intermodalism…’ (Rodrigue, D. J. (n.d.).). The need for integrated systems especially in the technological realm will help reduce operating cost, lower personnel requirements and increase the flow of goods through ports and terminals. What initially began as one business or more trying to gain an advantage causing prices to soar, it has now evolved into an integrated supply chain management system to have great service, reliability, cost, safety and integrated technology. Intermodal freight and container technology now use many of the same technologies. This essay will aim to give a background on each of the two types of technology: container and freight, as well as compare two examples with the integration of intermodal container and freight technology.
