NASM - BCS Chapter 1 Intro to Behavior Change Questions & Answers Three Elements Necessary for Creating Long-Lasting Healthy Lifestyle Changes Fitness, Nurtrition and Behavior Change Fitness and wellness professionals are able to use scientifically validated screening and intervention techniques in a guided self-help way to progress clients to results The goal of guided self-help is to initiate the change process and facilitate ongoing support, consulting, and coaching to sustain the change as long as deemed necessary by the client In such a case, the Behavior Change Specialist (as explained later in this chapter, the certification for this role) must be able to recognize if he or she is working within the professional's specified scope of practice and manage the situation in a way that puts the care of the client first A wellness professional typically works with other healthcare providers or as another type of healthcare provider, such as a nurse, health educator, human resources representative, or nutritionist. The coach has the following responsibilities: • Discover, clarify, and align with what the client wants to achieve • Encourage client self-discovery • Elicit client-generated solutions and strategies • Hold the client responsible and accountable The role of the wellness professional is to help clients identify and pursue goals that are related to general health, specifically nutrition and exercise. Wellness professionals accomplish this through a self-help approach that is guided by a knowledgeable professional in the areas of health, wellness, exercise, and nutrition. Specifically, the wellness professional works with clients to help them adopt and maintain healthy behaviors so as to improve and extend the quality of life through the utilization of scientifically proven behavior change psychological skills, exercise programming, and nutritional advice planning. The obesity epidemic is increasing the need for emerging occupations that can work effectively with sound exercise, nutrition, and behavior change principles. Fitness and wellness professionals who specialize in behavior change use psychological principles to achieve greater client results. They have the knowledge, skills, and abilities needed to work with clients on the various barriers that are impeding progress.
