Amjad G Btec Level 3 – Unit 8

TASK 2 – P3/P4

In a written report explain identified strengths and areas for improvement in two different
team sports, and make suggestions relating to personal development

Performance analysis – Subjective observation

Outline key skills and tactics from both football and basketball

Throughout the practical session we had established a range of skills and tactics to assist our
team. This had involved various techniques as well as methods from both sports.

Basketball key skills and tactics

There were a few skills I had learned and developed throughout of my training. The
following skills were; throwing, catching, passing, marking, creating space and shooting.

Also there were a few tactics involved in basketball which were; counter-attack, zonal
marking, man to man marking, transition plays, set plays, screen play, defensive play,
dropping back and clear communication.

Football key skills and tactics

Likewise to basketball, in football there were a wide range of skills which I had covered
during the training and they were the following: passing, shooting, crossing, movement,
turning and tackling.

The training programme included various tactics in order to be implemented in game
situations. For example, the tactics included were; delay, depth, concentration, balance,
discipline, patience and predictability.

Describe your strengths in football (use analysis in P1 as a basis)

The strengths in me for football were the following; speed, passing, shooting, turning and
controlling. First of all, I thought that speed was my core strength this was because I had the
ability to beat my opponents fairly easily when it came to dribbling with the ball to attack
along with my fellow teammates. I realised it was my main strength as I often beat my
opponent down the wing constantly.

Passing was one of my skills which I had acquired. The reason behind this was that I had the
capability to pass the ball to my teammate regardless of whatever foot it was. During the
game the majority of my passes were right to my teammates feet this may be because I
didn’t execute a pass which had so much power which it would go out of play or produced a
pass to weak that it made it easier for the opposition to intercept.

Another strong point for me in football was also my shooting, in terms of accuracy. In the
training session, we had a 3 versus 3 matches. I had scored 3 goals within 5 shots in a game.

This proved that the majority of my shots were on target although I didn’t score every single
goal when I had shot. The reason for my good level of accuracy was that I had utilised the
correct method which was side-footing the ball rather than going for power which would
have meant that my shots were to be unlikely on target.

There was another strength that I had in me which was turning. This was a skill useful when
it came to beating a defender. For example in my training session 1 versus 1 situation, I had
to take on my opponent and the space was very limited. I shielded the ball away and
unnoticeably changed direction; this meant that I caught my opponent of guard as I
different my style of play, creating more space and even had the chance to accelerate away
quickly to lose my defender who was marking me closely.

Explain your areas for improvement in football (use analysis in P1 as a basis)

There were a few areas to develop myself as a football player. I strongly believe that tackling
was an issue because most of the time I would commit a foul and this had resulted in me
being sent off due to my careless challenge. To improve I would have to apply pressure by
closing down my opponent instead of charging at him and missing the ball completely.

Another problem was over-hitting or producing a weak cross. This had resulted in losing
possession and the ultimate chance for a goal-scoring opportunity. In my session I had to be
in pairs and had to implement on my techniques for low-crossing and long-crossings in order
to develop my passing over a distance. This also aid in me helping the team by picking the
right type of pass.

Shooting was a bit of an issue. This was because I didn’t either have enough space to get the
shot away as the opposition were too close or I would often have a shot at tight angles
when I usually beat my opponents down the wing. The better alternative for me would be
crossing instead as this may give a chance for my teammates to score since they are at a
better position than me. In order to improve I can practice shooting with both feet so I don’t
need to rely on my strong foot to score.

Tracking back (fitness). There was a problem with endurance and stamina, as I couldn’t
make the most out of my abilities when it came to the later stages. For example, when I was
attacking with my teammates and had lost possession and I wouldn’t be able to chase my
opponent because I had used up my energy and therefore didn’t have the stamina to get
back and help out my defence. To improve I committed to a training programme which was
designed to develop my cardiovascular fitness levels.

Development plan for football performance must include:

Aims and objectives
 To improve fitness levels
 Defensive strategies such as; tackling
 Set pieces (crossing and shooting)
