M3 – Justify the selection of fitness tests commenting on suitability, reliability, validity
and practicality

Flexibility (sit and reach):

The suitability of this test can be limited in terms of the component of sport. For example,
this type of test would be suitable and convenient for people who do gymnastics rather than
the people who do swimming since there are no normative data available for that specific
sport. This test is valid because it does measure flexibility in terms of the lower back and
hamstrings as the measurements that have been taken during the test can be compared by
the values. The testing procedure for sit and reach is reliable because this test can be
repeated more than once with having to experience similar values and results, which clearly
shows that this test is repeatable and consistent. The practicality of this test is very easy to
conduct although it does require assistant to administrate the results.

Strength (hand-grip dynamometer):

Hand grip dynamometer is suitable for measuring strength at to some extent. For example,
it is ideal for determining how much strength an individual preserves in his forearms. It can
be debated that this test in not efficient for sports such as; boxing when this type of test is
ideal for strength because it may not measure the strong point of other muscles such as;
bicep or triceps. This test is valid because it does measure strength in the forearms
however, to a level of degree it doesn’t represent the amount of strength of other muscle
groups and may mean that it could not assess the boxer’s main asset i.e. how powerful the
boxers punch is. This test can be reliable, depending on the scale being adjusted regularly to
ensure accurate results and whether the results are set on the right units i.e. kilos or lbs, it
can also be argued that results can unreliable if the performer uses his opposite hand. The
practicality of this test is easy to carry out since it doesn’t require assistant and other special
devices and is very simple to use.

Aerobic endurance (bleep test):

The suitability of this test can be relevant in terms of the current fitness levels the athlete
acquires i.e. level 9 stage 2, giving accurate results which shows how much endurance the
athlete has and can reflect on sports such as; football and long distant running. This test is
valid as it does measure the compulsory factor which is vo 2, which in other words calculates
the rate of the heart and lungs being used effectively with oxygen, assessing the athlete’s
aerobic capacity. At to some level, this test can and not be reliable in some circumstances.
For example, some factors needs to be controlled as it can affect the results which may have
an impact on the performance. The following factors which needs to be catered for are the;
environment, running surfaces and type of clothing’s. It can also depend on the technique
too i.e. ability to turn quickly which can be argued this type of test can merge with Illinois
agility test. The practicality of this test is very convenient because it can allow more than
