The seven language families that all indigenous languages in Africa fall under, as
stated by Werner (1930) and Philippson (2003), are:
• Afro-Asiatic
• Nilo-Saharan
• Niger-Congo
• Khoisan
• Austronesian
• Indo-European

1.2 Demonstrate how synchronic comparison occur using the same word from
three indigenous languages of South Africa. (3)
Synchronic comparison occurs when we compare the same word across different
languages at the same point in time. For example, the word for "water" in three
indigenous languages of South Africa could be compared:
• Zulu: amanzi
• Xhosa: amanzi
• Sotho: metsi

languages family need to display certain features. Name these features and
