Oedipus Test Review (Correct Answers) what is significant about the fact that the first line in the play is a question? the play will be a series of questions and answers- a mystery of sorts how does oedipus choose the spokesman of the group of supplicants? oedipus chooses the apperntlly oldest supplicant o be the groups spokesman what is your first impression of oedipus? he is powerful and proud what problem is afflicting thebes at this time? a strange plague is causing sickness and suffering. the crops, the herds and even unborn children are dying. what is the house of Cadmus? thebes-founded by cadmus how does the priest say the supplicants view oedipus? how does this begin to establish oedipus as an aristotelian tragic hero? the priest says they do not via oedipus as a new god, but as the primary of men. this holds with aristotle's view that a traffic hero had to be god,demi-god, or hero. in case we didn't already know it, what exposition does he priest provide in this scene? the priest reminds the audience that oedipus is the hero who solved the riddle of the sphinx (the "fell songstress") and freed the city of Thebes from its bondage. why do the supplicants believe that oedipus will be able to find a solution to the famine? the priest explains that oedipus had no human help when he solved the riddle of the sphinx, so he must have had some divine help. The supplicant now hopes Oedipus can consult his divine aides and find the cure of the famine why does oedipus claim e suffers even more than the supplicants? oedipus claims that each supplicant only suffers for himself individually while he, oedipus, suffers for the individual subject, his subjects generally and for himself. what impression do we get form oedipus based on his language? while oedipus might indeed be a good and compassion king, there is an air of pride and pompousness about him what action has oedipus taken to find an answer to the city's problem? oedipus has sent freon to the oracles at delphi to find out what could be said or done to save the city what is oedipus and Creon;s relationship? creon is oedipus' brother-in-law and the brother of jocasta what is foreshadowed by oedipus' promise to the priest? oedipus promises that he will do whatever the oracle commands. he does not quality the statement at all. this foreshadows the probability that he will be commanded to do an extremely unpleasant or even impossible task to end this famine. why does the priest suspect Creon brings good news? he sees that freon is wearing a crown are from a laurel, the tree of apollo, and believes he wouldnt do so if he had brought bad news. when freon arrives from delphi, what does oedipus insist that he do? what does this indicate about his character? although rein prefers to discsus what the oracle has said in private, oedipus insists that everyone should hear. while on one hand, it does illustrate the extent to which he loves his subject, it also points to a thoughtless, impetuous streak. cresol wants to speak to oedipus in private first. why do you suppose creon wants to talk to oedipus in private first? being jocastas brother, crown probably knows the first part of the story, that jocatsa's son was destined to murder his father. the father laius has been murdered. freon probably wants to protect the privacy of his family and to protect his sister. what does creon report from the oracle? creon explains that the murdererof the former king, laius, was never found and punished. this murderer is in thebes and is the direct cause of the plague. the killer must be exiled or murdered to end the plague. what is oedipus reaction to freons' information? he immediately asks questions about the circumstances of laius' murder, presumably in order to help find the murderers and purge the city. explain the dramatic irony in oedipus interrogation of creon? the audience knows the story, that
