First-person: the story is told from Gregor’s perspective. B. Third-person limited: though in third-person, the narration limits itself to Gregor’s perspective and thoughts. C. Third-person omniscient: the narration covers the thoughts and actions of all of the characters in the story. D. Third-person omniscient: the narration remains focused on Gregor’s perspective; however, it occasionally branches out to other perspectives (i.e. the Samsas, following Gregor’s death). EACH QUESTION BELOW IS WORTH 4 POINTS (EXCEPT MULTIPLE CHOICE) 2. What effect does the point of view have on the story overall—such as on the tone or theme? the point of view shows all sides in the situation. from Gregor’s side it is a sad tone since he is having to deal with so much. from the family’s side it is more of a stressed tone since they’re having to do a lot more work now that Gregor is a bug. 3. What does metamorphosis mean? Provide several examples. Explain why Kafka uses the definite article, ‘the’, rather than the indefinite article, ‘a’ in the book title. it means that doing nothing but working to fulfill an obligation can isolate and dehumanize a person. Kafka "the" because it was not a simple metamorphosis. It was a specific change that happened to the main character. Although it is not possible to happen in the real world, transforming into a giant moth represents the ultimate change that can happen to anyone. 4. Why does Kafka choose “a vermin” rather than any other insect or animal for the story? he chose a vermin to represent how his family sees him the moment he stops working. all his purpose is in the family is to bring in money. if he can’t do that he’s seen as a worthless pest to them, a vermin. 5. The word translated as vermin in the first sentence of The Metamorphosis is ungeziefer in the original German. As Kafka most likely knew it means “an unclean animal not suited for sacrifice.” Apply this definition to the work as a whole. What can this symbolize? it symbolizes that Gregor no longer has to sacrifice living his life just so that he can uphold his family financially. 6. What does Gregor’s reaction to his transformation in the beginning of the story reveal about his character? Gregor calmly wonders what has happened to him then attempts to fall back asleep. His calm behavior indicates that he accepts the unfortunate events of his life and instead of dwelling on them immediately deals with the consequences.
