TYPES OF HEALTH ASSESSMENT AND THE
NURSING PROCESS MODULE 1 INTRODUCTION

HEALTH
• a state of complete physical, mental , and social well being and not merely the absence of
disease of infirmity (WHO)*
WHO - World Health Organization

• an individual is viewed as a total person interacting with others

• the individual functions within his/her physical, psychological, and social fields**

3 dimensions of health ( dynamic/interrelated )

Physical Health - relates to efficient function of the body and it’s system andincludes
physical capacity to perform task and physical fitness.

Mental health - state of well being in which an individual recognizes it’s own abilities can cope
with normal stress if life can work productively and fruitfully and it’s able to contribute to the
community

Social - involes being able to interact with others and participate in the community in both
independent and cooperative manner



Models of Health*
• a process and a state of being and becoming whole and integrated in a way that reflects the
persona and environment mutuality (Roy and Andrews, 1999) - Model of adaptation
• the state of a person as characterized by soundness or wholeness of developed human
structures and mental bodily functioning that requires therapeutic self-care (Orem, 1971)
3 Orem’s Self care model of nursing
Wholly Compensatory - patient fully independent to the nurse
Partially Compensatory - intervention done by the nurse and other done the patient
Supportive Educative/Development - the patient can do everything but lacks in knowledge

• a culturally defined, valued, and practiced state of well being reflective of the ability to perform
role activities (Leininger, 1991) - culture care ( render cultural congruent care )

• the state of well being and the use of every power the person possesses to the full extent
(Nightingale, 1860)

• Ecologic model - developed by Leavell and Clark (1965) examines the interaction of agent,
host, and environment
- health is present when this 3 variables are in harmony but if harmony is destrupted health is
not maintained at the highest level so disease and illness can occur
