As an aspiring researcher, it is essential to understand the various
aspects involved in becoming a successful and impactful academic.
Learning Unit 1 introduces us to key concepts such as ‘journey’,
‘curiosity and courage’, ‘intervention’, and ‘social justice and critique’,
which are crucial in shaping the identity of a researcher. In this essay, I
will discuss how these aspects apply to Smith, a hypothetical individual,
and how they personally resonate with my own journey towards
becoming a researcher in education.
Firstly, the concept of ‘journey’ is central to the development of a
researcher. Embracing the journey of becoming a researcher involves
the willingness to learn, grow and adapt to the challenges and
experiences encountered along the way. For Smith, this may involve
pursuing an undergraduate degree in a related field, seeking mentorship
from experienced researchers, and engaging in experiential learning
opportunities such as internships or research assistant positions.
Similarly, for me, the journey involves pursuing higher education,
seeking out research opportunities, and continuously expanding my
knowledge and skills in the field of education.
