Coccinellidae – Ladybirds;
- Beetles [elytra – wing cases] and biting mouthparts
- Small- medium [1-10mm] round and oval
- Brightly colored elytra / short clubbed antenna
- Feet [tarsi] 4 segments [3rd small/vestigial] – short retractable legs
- Pronotum broad, extends forwards, patterned.
Life Cycle;
- Egg [June/July], Larvae, Cocoon [July], Adult [Sept/May]
Types;
1. Coccinella septempunctata; 7 spot ladybug
2. Adalia bipunctata; 2 spot ladybug
3. Adalia decempunctata; 10 spot [3 rows of spots, 1 shoulder spot, 4mm]
4. Harmonia axyridis; Harlequin [4 rows of spots, 2 shoulder spots, 6-8mm]
5. Psyllobora vigintiduopunctata; 22 spots, yellow
6. Propylea quattuordecimpunctata; 14 spot, yellow
7. Chilocorni;
a. Kidney spot ladybug; 1 large red spot, black
b. Heather ladybug; 3 low red spots, black, found in heatherland
c. Pine; front spots comma shaped, black
8. Halyzia sedecimgutta; yellow with white spots
9. Calvia quattuordecimguttata; cream spot.
- Non-native [alien] species introduced outside of native range
- Invasive – threaten biodiversity [harmonia axyridis] predation and competition.
