Soc 100 exam 1 questions and answers 100% pass In class, I argued that in our everyday observations we gather poor quality data and analyze it poorly. Provide an example to illustrate both of these problems. Whodunnit? video We did not notice any of the changes being made in the background What is the difference between inaccurate observation and selective observation? Provide an example of both. Inaccurate observation- How many clocks are on the Purdue Bell Tower? 1, 2, 3, 4 (observe consciously is the solution) Selective observation- Hold a belief + focus only on confirmatory evidence Example: "The weather report is always wrong." (solution: do not ignore contradictory data e.g., get all your info from Facebook friends. Instead seek deviant cases) Why is it important to know the source of information you use to make decisions and form opinions? Opinions are heightened especially if getting it from one source. You gather poor quality data and then don't analyze the data properly. So your opinion is skewed. Why do we so often rely on tradition and authority to answer questions about the world? You are influenced by the people who raised you. You value what the authority figures say and they have usually done things based off of tradition. If tradition and authority are not necessarily bad sources of information, why should we be careful about relying on them when the stakes are high? Tradition might be correct but it has continuous mistakes. While authority you rely on only one point of view. Why is the statement, "Two out of three doctors recommend our products." not very informative? The numbers don't have content. You could just ask 3 doctors and nothing more You are invited to a presentation that promises to reveal the secrets to getting rich in real estate. The presenter is considered an expert on the topic because he has studied the tricks and habits of the most successful real estate moguls. Why should you be skeptical of his claims that you will get rich if you adopt those same tricks and habits? There is professional research however, we cannot always find ways to understand this. Personal experience is not representative of everyone Our textbook says that a good sociologist, "makes the familiar strange." What does that phrase mean? What questions might you ask to help make things strange? We seldom examine things that are familiar. We see them as "natural" or unavoidable. Questions- Are things what they seem? Why are things the way they are? How could things be different? In class, we used a sociological approach to make urinals strange (as if they were not strange enough). In particular, we examined which urinal people choose in different scenarios. What did the patterns of choices suggest about the forces that influence bathroom behavior? Level of comfort and violating people's personal space. How can you tell that the educational system is a social institution? It is organized and is a standard way to meet educational needs. Society's children are taught basic academic knowledge, learning skills, and cultural norms. What does the sociological imagination encourage you to link? We must link biography to history How could using your sociological imagination help you better understand why some Purdue students are more successful than others after graduation? Histroy- Purdue has great STEM programs backed by innovating technology and famous alumni, Big 10 school According to Karl Marx, all history is a history of conflict. What were the two major groups that he saw in conflict in capitalist economies? Capitalists and Proletariat Marx also thought that the class conflict associated with capitalism could be ended. What did he think caused the conflict? How did he think the conflict could be ended? He thought that the differences in wealth caused conflict and the way it could be ended by everyone having the same opportunity to make money or make the same amounts. (Communism) Max Weber was more interested than Marx
