7A General Pest Control: Unit 1. Introduction to General Pest Control - Terms to Know Arthropod - ANS An animal with jointed appendages (legs, etc.) and an external skeleton. Arthropods are invertebrates: animals without backbones. They have a hard outer body covering called an exoskeleton for protection and support. This exoskeleton is jointed, which allows them to move. Crayfish, insects, centipedes, and spiders are all arthropods. Exclusion - ANS Using some sort of physical barrier to keep a pest out of an area. Habitat - ANS A specific area or environment in which an organism normally lives. Insect - ANS An arthropod with three body regions: a head (front), a thorax (middle), and abdomen (rear). Insects usually have one pair of antennae on the head. They also have two pairs of wings and three pairs of legs on the thorax. The abdomen contains most of the insect's digestive and reproductive organs. Most have complex mouthparts adapted for a special type of feeding.
