,Applying PRINCE2 Practices

Designed to All 7 practices
support should be
application and applied, varied
tailoring according to
context
Management
approaches define
procedures,
techniques,
standards and
responsibilities

- PRINCE2 method should be applied and tailored to fit project context
o This will include the way the PRINCE2 practices are applied.
- PRINCE2 practices designed to help PM team apply and tailor the method
o Through a suite of management approaches (e.g., benefits management approach)
o Each management approach defines:
▪ Procedures
▪ Techniques
▪ Standards to be applied
▪ Responsibilities for that aspect of PM to be effective
- Contextual factors will influence the level of control required:
o Importance
o Risk
o Urgency
- These factors will determine the degree of formality and frequency of monitoring, reviewing,
reporting, and decision-making.
- All SEVEN practices should be applied in a project.
o They vary according to the scale, risk, the people and organisations involved, and the
complexity/simplicity of the project concerned.

, Management Products
- Two management products that are relevant to the majority of the PRINCE2 practices:
o Project Initiation Documentation (PID)
o Project Log
Project Initiation Documentation (PID)
- Comprises the package of information developed and compiled during initiation to gain
authorisation to proceed with the project, and it provides the basis for its ongoing
management.
Project log
- Maintains a live record of project activities and progress
- Captures a wide range of project activities and progress information, such as issues and risks

Project Initiation
Documentation
PRINCE2 management products (PID)
describe the information that will
be required to manage the project
Project Log

Project Initiation Documentation (PID)
- PID gives direction and scope of the project and forms the ‘contract’ between the project
manager and the project board.
o It is a living document and should always reflect the current status.
- THREE primary uses of the PID:
o Sound basis for commitment
▪ Ensure that the project has a sound basis before asking the project board o
make any major commitment to the project
o Base document for ongoing assessment
▪ Act as a base document against which the project board and project
manager can assess progress, issues, and ongoing viability questions
o Single source of reference
▪ Provide a single source of reference about the project so that people joining
the ‘temporary organisation’ can quickly and easily discover what the project
is about and how it is being managed.
