i. Explain the purpose of the ‘plans’ prac ce
ii. Describe the key rela onships between the ‘plans’ prac ce and the
principles
iii. Explain the purpose of the key management products required to
support the ‘plans’ prac ce: work package descrip on; project product
descrip on; plan (incl. project, stage, team and excep on plan).
iv. Define key concepts related to the ‘plans’ prac ce: schedule;
dependency; project plan; stage plan; team plan’ excep on plan; scope
v. Describe the guidance for effec ve management of plans: the planning
horizon; project stages; product-based planning; using tolerances to
manage constraints; delivery sustainability
vi. Describe the PRINCE2 technique for the ‘plans’ prac ce
Lessons Learned
- Explore and understand the purpose of the plans prac ce
- Understand the different types of plans:
o project plan,
o stage plan,
o team plan, and
o excep on plan
- Know about structuring the project into management stages
- Describe the planning procedure based on a product-based planning technique
- Define and analyse the management products

Defini on of a plan
A proposal that outlines the what, where, when, how, who and cost of the project as a
whole (or a subset of ac vi es)
Plans in PRINCE2
All PRINCE2 plans have the same fundamental structure. What differs is the purpose, scope, and level
of detail. Each type of plan has its own defini on:
- Project plan
o A high-level plan showing the major products of the project and when, how, and at
what cost they will be delivered
o Purpose of the project plan is to provide confidence to the project board that the
project will fulfil its business case
- Stage plan
o A detailed plan used as the basis for project management control throughout a stage
o Prepared for each stage
o Similar to the project plan in structure, but each element is divided to the level of
detail required for day-to-day control by the project manager
- Team plan
o A plan used as the basis for organising and controlling the work of a team when
execu ng a work package
o Op onal in PRINCE2
o Requirements and extent will be determined by the size and complexity of the
project and the number of resources involved
o Team plans are created in the managing product delivery process
- Excep on plan
o A plan that follows an excep on report and explains how the project will respond to
the excep on within the stage
o Must be produced to show the ac ons required to recover from or avoid a forecast
devia on from agreed tolerances in the project plan or a stage plan
