Purpose of closing a project
The purpose of the process is to:
- Provide a fixed point at which acceptance of the project product is confirmed
- Recognise that objec ves set out (or approved changes) have been achieved
- Close the project in an orderly way where there is cause for a premature close
The fixed points for closing could be:
- Acceptance confirmed
o This could involve referring to the acceptance criteria or gaining acceptance directly
from the customer
- Objec ves achieved
o As set out in the project ini a on documenta on
* The acceptance criteria is a priori sed list of criteria that the project product must meet before the
customer will accept it
, Objec ves of closing a project
Check user acceptance
• Check user acceptance of the project product
Ensure that business is able to support the products
• Ensure business can support the products when the project is closed
Review performance of the project
• Review against its baselines
Assess any benefits
• Assess any benefits that have already been realised and update the
benefits management approach to include any post-project benefit
reviews
All open issues and risks addressed
• Ensure that provision has been made to address all open issues and risks,
with follow-on action recommendations
Ensure project is closed in an orderly way
• Ensure that the project is closed in an orderly way and not simply
abandoned (in the case of a premature close)
