Viral rhinitis-s/sx - ANSWER - watery rhinorrhea - erythematous nasal mucosa (differentiate from pale, boggy, gray mucosa of allergies) - sneezing - nasal and sinus congestion - headache - sore throat - cough - malaise Viral rhinitis-management - ANSWER - self-limiting (5-10 days) - supportive care - hydration, steam/humidifier - APAP, Motrin, Advil for fever and pain - warm salt water gargles Pharyngitis/Tonsillitis-causes - ANSWER - inflammation of pharynx or tonsils - viruses (RSV, influenza A and B, Epstein-Barr) - bacterial Pharyngitis/Tonsillitis-s/sx - ANSWER - erythematous pharynx - rhinorrhea if viral - cough - anterior cervical adenopathy - fever (bacterial) - painful throat - macropapular rash Centor criteria - ANSWER - used to indicate pharyngitis due to Group A beta-hemolytic streptococcus pyogenes - if 2 or more criteria are present, do rapid strep test - "FLEA" criteria: 1. Fever over 100.4 F 2. Lack of cough 3. Exudate-pharyngotonsillar 4. Anterior cervical Adenopathy
