River Nile-

- 6,700km long river fowing through Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, Congo-Kinshasa,
Kenya, Ethiopia, Eritrea, South Sudan, Sudan and Egypt.
- Has too major tributes, the White Nile which meet in Khartoum in the Sudan.
- The Nile is an increasingly valuable resource, providing water for domestc, industrial and
agricultural purposes and it is under increasing pressure from rapid populaton growth,
economic development and climate change.
- The river is used in Egypt and Sudan for a primary water source. Egypt depends on the river
Nile for 95% of its water needs.
- There is a long history of disagreement over the use of the Nile. Originally water allocaton
agreements favoured the downstream countries of Egypt and Sudan.
- In 1929 a Nile agreement between Egypt and the UK (the colonial power in Sudan at the
tme) granted signiicant water allocatons to Egypt and Sudan. It also granted Egypt veto
power over constructon projects on the Nile and its tributaries, in an efort to minimise
interference with the fow of water in the Nile.
