In your answer, explain what stories appeal to this age group and why a cumulative tale such as TEXT A is specifically appropriate for teaching them to read, commenting on the plot, the level of difficulty, and the length of the story. (15 marks) Discuss the value of Text A for educational purposes from the teacher-centered perspective of Behaviourist theory. In your answer, you must discuss how a Behaviourist would use the story in a classroom to teach vocabulary and explain why a Behaviourist would find TEXT A useful for teaching vocabulary. You will receive a mark out of four for language. Question 1.3. (10 marks) Study the picture provided in Text A. Write a paragraph in which you discuss the beneficial purposes the picture serves in the context of children’s literature. Discuss fully how at least four of the following benefits apply to the visual: • Visuals and words stimulate children’s imagination by introducing new concepts. • Visuals, together with words, can teach children to be more aware of their environment and curious about how things work. • Visuals help to make books and the activity of reading interesting. • Visuals help children to understand stories for themselves. • Visuals can take the place of words so that words can focus on vital plot points, while visuals clarify other details. You will receive a mark out of 2 for language. TEXT B: After you have read TEXT B below, answer Question 2. ‘The sun’ appears in a collection called Stories Gogo Told Me by Lisa Grainger. In a single paragraph, name two virtues the man who helps the sun in TEXT B exemplifies and briefly explain how the outcome of the story shows he is a better example than the other man. They’re catching some Z’s. They’re snoozing and snoring as loud as they please. They snore through the morning. They drowse through the day. They’ll wake from their slumber and take to the skies. They’ll search for a snack, like a sheep or some cattle, then fly around looking for knights they can battle. By morning, they’re worn out and rest while it’s light. They sleep every day since they fight every knight. Question 3 Read TEXT C. Write an essay in which you demonstrate your understanding of the poem ‘The Dragons are Dozing’ and then discuss the suitability of this poem for a multicultural South African Grade 3 classroom. A typical Grade 3 classroom in South Africa primarily consists of children around the age of 9 years old, including small numbers of 8 and 10-year-olds. In your essay, you must: • Provide a brief summary of the plot of the poem. • Identify examples of and explain the effect of alliteration and punning in the poem. • Discuss the suitability of the poem for this age group. Comment on the language difficulty, length and content (what the poem is about). • Comment on the relatability of the content for South African children of various cultural backgrounds. You will be assessed for content (30 marks), language (10 marks) and structure (10 marks), so ensure that you answer the questions, edit carefully, and organise your points into coherent paragraphs. Remember that you cannot answer the questions in point form (so, do not section your points into bullets; bullets were merely used above to make it easier for you to discern the points that must be included in your discussion). Rather you need to answer in an essay form in which you need to provide an introduction, a body consisting of multiple paragraphs, and a conclusion.
