First to charter a chapter in Africa. First to form auxiliary groups. First to be constitutionally bound to a fraternity, Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. Incorporation Sorority members Myrtle Tyler, Gladys Warrington, Joanna Houston, Josephine F. Johnson and L.O. Goldia Smith first incorporated Zeta Phi Beta Sorority on March 30, 1923 in Washington D.C. In 1939, the Sorority was incorporated in the state of Illinois. Founders (The Five Pearls) Arizona Cleaver Stemons: Arizona Cleaver was the first president of Alpha chapter and the first national president of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority. She completed her graduate and post-graduate studies in the field of social work and was responsible for chartering numerous undergraduate and graduate chapters throughout the United States. Pearl Anna Neal: After graduating from Howard University's Conservatory of Music, Founder Neal continued her studies at the Julliard School of Music. In 1938, she was the first black woman in New York to earn a master's degree in music from Columbia University. An extremely accomplished musician, Founder Neal taught music in North Carolina public schools and served as a director of seniors majoring in music at Teachers College in Winston Salem, NC. Myrtle Tyler Faithful: Myrtle Tyler was the second national president of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority and blood sister to Viola Tyler. A high school mathematics and English teacher, Founder Tyler was an active member of Alpha Zeta chapter in Baltimore, Maryland. Viola Tyler Goings: Viola Tyler graduated from Howard University with a teaching degree and a major in math. She taught school in Ohio for many years and was always very active in community affairs. Fannie Pettie Watts: Fannie Pettie graduated from Howard with a Bachelor of Arts degree in education and taught junior and senior high schools in Savannah, Georgia. She was credited with organizing two additional Zeta chapters and had active membership in Delta Alpha Zeta chapter. Woolridge McGhee - Dr. Deborah Cannon P. Wolfe - Mildred Cater B. Bradham- Isabel M. Herson - Dr. Janice G. Kissner- Dr. Edith V. Francis- (alive) Dr. Eunice S. Thomas - Dr. Jylla Moore Foster Tearte- (alive) Dr. Barbara West Carpenter- (alive) Barbara C. Moore- (alive) Sheryl P. Underwood- (alive) Current President (24th international) Mary Breaux Wright Programs Elder Care Initiative- strives to provide education and awareness about preparing for your senior years. The African American community is least prepared when it comes to retirement, estate planning and understanding the legal and financial preparation needed to care for parents, grandparents and ultimately, for our own long term care. It is a comprehensive program that also focuses on elder abuse awareness, financial peace, supporting the caregiver and volunteering at senior care facilities. Stork's Nest- is a 40-year-old partnership between Zeta Phi Beta and March of Dimes. Stork's Nest is a community-based, prenatal, health promotion program for low-income pregnant women. The program is designed to promote prenatal care participation and healthy behaviors during pregnancy through two components-incentives and education. Stork's Nest clients "earn" points toward incentives, such as maternity or baby care items, through a variety of positive, health-promoting activities; attending prenatal care appointments, participating in prenatal education classes, keeping appointments for well-baby visits,, etc. Thousands of women are serviced at Stork's Nest all over the country every year. Zeta Prematurity Awareness Program (ZPAP)- occurs annually during the entire month of November in support of World Prematurity Day on November 17th and the March of Dimes. Since 2003, Zeta chapters and auxiliaries reach out to over 300 houses of worship annually across the country and distribute information on prematurity awareness, causes of prematurity and the importance of seeking prenatal care in an effort to decrease infant mortality and the number of low birth weight babies. In 2014, over 100,000 people were reached through the Sorority's grassroots campaign. Adopt-A-School- allows members of Zeta Phi Beta to identify low performing Xi Omicron Philanthropy March of Dimes Z-HOPE Z-HOPE is an outreach service program that has six primary objectives, corresponding measures of success and a mechanism for chapter recognition. The primary objectives are: To provide culturally appropriate informational activities according to the Z-HOPE program format To foster collaborative partnerships between community organizations with shared goals To promote the opportunities for expansion in Stork's Nest programs To facilitate community service and mentorship opportunities for members of the organization To provide an equitable chapter recognition program for community services rendered To provide a standard reporting format to concentrate efforts and demonstrate the organization's impact Motto A community conscious, action-oriented organization Colors Royal Blue and Pure White Symbol White Dove Nicknames Zetas, Pretty Kitties, The Dovely Ladies, Finer Women Famous Members Zora Neale Hurston - Writer and Folklorist Minnie Riperton - Singer Sheryl Underwood - Comedian Violette Anderson - 1st woman of color to practice law before the U.S. Supreme Court Dr. Deborah Wolfe - Former U.S. Education Chief Dionne Warwick - Singer Wendy Palmer - Former WNBA player Nakia Sonford - WNBA player (Washington Mystics) Tamika Whitmore - WNBA player (Connecticut Sun) Dr. Joyce Payne - Founder of the Thurgood Marshall Scholarship Fund Flower White Rose
