SOCS 350 Week 1 Discussion 2 - Some of my best Your company is in need of someone to Fll a new position. The spot calls for some very speciFc skills, education, and experience, but you happen to ha ve an old friend who exactly Fts the bill. In addition, he has mentioned to you that he feels it is time to make a change and has been contemplating looking for a new job. You give him a call and he says that he is very interested, so you call the head of the department in question and tell him about your friend. The department head is very excited and tells you to have him call for an interview. You do and everything seems Fne. Several weeks pass and your friend calls you and asks if you have any idea what happened with the job. He interviewed and everything went well, but he never heard back and just learned that the position had been Flled with someone who has no experience and a much di±erent background. You call the department head and relay the question. After some hemming and hawing, the department head makes some vague statement about your friend not being a "good Ft." He was afraid that your friend's "accent" might………………………………………………………………. "Allport (1954) defined prejudice as a feeling, favorable or unfavorable, toward a person that was not based on actual experience (p. 7)." (Harvey 72). While discrimination can be defined as "a behavior that occurs when members of a social identity group are treated unfairly or unequally, because of their group memberships." (Harvey xiv). Prejudice differ from discrimination because being prejudice means that the attitudes and opinions of one group from another group are illogical and unreasonable. While discrimination refers to the behaviors against another group. Negative prejudice can lead to discrimination. I recently went back home to Jamaica for Christmas and I noticed prejudice against homosexual. Jamaican are well-known to be homophobic but it still surprise me to see that in this day and age they are still being ignorant. I went to an outdoor event and there was this young man walking around looking feminine and he was just being picked on and called all the nasty names Jamaicans have for someone who is gay. Some of my best "Ethnocentrism, the practice of judging another culture by the standards of one’s own culture." (J. 51). While, "Allport (1954) defined prejudice as a feeling, favorable or unfavorable, toward a person that was not based on actual experience (p. 7). (Harvey 72)." I believe the department head is being both but more so he's being prejudice. Based on this definition of prejudice he has never had an actual experience with this person. I definitely would tell my friend exactly what was said. I would also advice my friend on the steps he could take to report it if that's the route he wanted to take and I would help him through it. Depending on how long I've been working with this company and how well I get along with the managerial team I would speak to someone about it. I'm sure if I noticed the lack of minority in that department they also have noticed it. Sometimes speaking up means that you are risking your job. If it's something you believe in then I believe you should fight for it. I believe prejudice is everywhere, but I would not like to work in an environment where they see nothing wrong with it. And as Instructor Stewart commented to make sure the child knows he can choose a child more than once. I am thankful that my boys attend a school with many children that are of different ethnic backgrounds. I would be interested to see what they chose when asked the same questions. I wonder if the child that participated in the experiment would have had different answers had he not attended a school that is mostly white. This was a very good and enlightening video. Thank you for sharing.
