Task 1

Crime prevention and the control strategies used by the uniformed public services

There are many principles and tactics made by the police on crime prevention which I will be
discussing. The first Crime prevention measures is Surveillance, CCTV is a commonly used
situational crime prevention surveillance in private and public use has increased, and has
found to be overall effective in preventing crime however it still has the disadvantages with
its use. One of the main problems of having CCTV is if the criminals can see it, they are
more likely to leave the area and find another property to commit the crime, which ultimately
doesn’t solve the crime. It definitely will protect your own house or property more such as if
individuals tried to commit burglary on your property, if they saw the CCTV they are more
likely to not enter your property and look for another house. This isn’t always the case
because some might have masks on their faces to hide their identity which means they are
still able to commit the crime. This strategy is being used for other crimes like car theft,
speeding or antisocial behaviour, these are the crimes found to be most effective with this
method where crimes that include violence not as much because individuals specifically
choose areas without CCTVs, unless it’s under the act of impulsiveness or being very
intoxicated. This is also because violence is used more at night which is often an intentional
choice because it’s much harder to identify the individuals, also it happens more at night
because that’s the time they are more likely intoxicated or have taken drugs. Applying this to
the youths case, this can be an effective measure to prevent more crime from being
committed in that area because like i’ve said if they know CCTV is there or can see it they
might not go to that area or not commit the crime. This doesn’t always work however, if they
cannot see the CCTV it will catch them in the act of the crime and if they can identify them,
at least then they can be prosecuted. Overall this is one of the most common or easiest
crime prevention the police can do and is overall in most cases effective.
The main benefit is Catching the act which provides evidence and increases the chances of
conviction and it prevents targeting of areas.
The second one is target hardening which is making your property harder for the offender to
access which is most commonly used for preventing burglary or property damage. They do
this by changing the locks or adding additional locks on your doors and windows which can
make it less accessible to enter which can stop individuals breaking into your property. This
can be expensive for some individuals especially for the better equipment, they might go for
an alternative that is cheaper but will still not be as effective. Criminals might notice that it is
a cheaper lock and is easier to access than other households which still doesn’t completely
prevent you from the crime, however any lock that is added is still better and will more likely
protect your property than without. A great example of modern ones are the ones that
require a password, which is more expensive and can work very well in particular if the
criminal doesn’t know the household so their chances of knowing the password is very low,
the only negative to this is making sure that your password isn’t easily predictable and only
memorable to your own household.
Another is situational crime prevention. Instead of focusing on the individuals committing
particular crimes, situational crime prevention is focused on the environments in which crime
occurs. The focus is on managerial and environmental changes that lower the likelihood of
crimes occurring, this is achieved by increasing the risk and minimising the reward which
makes the worth of the act committed too difficult. The police has learned 25 different
techniques which has been split into 5 groups under increasing the effort required to commit
