Discipline – Public Services Level 3
Assignment 1- Understanding the need for discipline in the uniformed
public services (UPS)
In this assignment I will be demonstrating my understanding of the need
and role of discipline in the uniformed public services (UPS) and the
impact that it has when it is used and when it is not followed correctly.
Discipline is the practice of training people to obey rules or a code of
behaviour using punishment to correct disobedience. Discipline is used in
everyday environments such as schools, hospitals, the justice system and
also the uniformed public services to create a solid foundation of mutual
respect and to maintain a hierarchical structure within these jobs.
1.1 The uniformed services. Emergency services
In the emergency services such as the ambulance service, it is essential
to have discipline. Their organisations ensure public safety and health, if
there was no order or structure present within their job they could
potentially endanger someone's life even more. Discipline in the
ambulance service allows the team to communicate effectively and work
closely with members to exchange opinion. It also means they
acknowledge medical restrictions and stay within their assigned job role.
Without discipline in the emergency services they would not be able to
attain success and save lives.
1.1 The uniformed services. Armed forces
Every Armed Forces teaches discipline as it is the key aspect which
teaches obedience, respect and ensures all rules and regulations will be
followed. A clear example of this is The British Army, discipline is crucial
for the army to function. Through this they are able to maintain a constant
routine and high morale, and follow standard procedures by keeping the
team well motivated. This means they are fulfilling their obligations as a
soldier. Discipline in The Army creates team success as they are able to
complete missions with minimal casualties out in the field. This also
means that when soldiers are off duty they are always behaving in a
professional manner, this is important for upholding their reputation. The
Army uses discipline in such a strict manner to enforce their hierarchical
structure, it promotes efficiency and promptness within their teams as
well as a sense of honour.
Discipline takes many roles and is used differently in each public service.
We can see this by comparing The Royal Air Force and The British Army
with a prison guard or firefighter. The RAF and The Army need much more
discipline as they are the supporting forces when our country is going to
war/ under threat. The public need reassurance that they can rely on them

so they need more order and stability. A prison guard needs more self-
disciple than job discipline (although they do have a chain of command)
as they should respect and follow their jobs limitations for example not
allowing contraband or having relationships with inmates, they need to
make sure they uphold this. The fire service also has a hierarchical
structure but when on duty need a sense of knowing when to voice their
opinion if the situation changes to make sure they are doing everything
they can to preserve life.
1.1 The uniformed services. Hierarchical structure of UPS
All uniformed Public Services are organised in a similar way, with a clear
rank structure which offers them defined roles and responsibilities, this
can differ to depending on their skill set but it relies on discipline to work
successfully. This makes sure that the structure is respected by their
colleagues.

The hierarchical structure within the The lowest rank in the army is private, they are usually a
army; newly trained soldier with basic knowledge and little or no
authority. Any rank higher than a lance corporal can supervise
or instruct a small group/ team of soldiers. As you reach the
more advanced roles they will give orders to sub-units and
supervise the operations. This rank structure is extremely
important as it reflects a person’s hard work and
responsibilities as well as making sure everyone fulfils their
duties. Without this structure there would be a lack of good
communication and missions could not be executed safely.

The hierarchical structure in the
Royal Navy;
The need for a clear structure in the Royal Navy is important
so when at sea there is order on the ship and information can
be passed down clearly. There needs to be respect among all
the ranks so briefs are understood and everyone is clear of
the missions. Without their structure there would be chaos
and the Navy’s service would be in effective.
