DRIVING STANDARDS AND TRAINING
Whenever an emergency service is responding to an incident, it is critical for the response team to
get to their location effective and safely. This is because they can’t help anyone if they damage the
emergency vehicle when reacting to the incident as it will make them ineffective. For the response
team to be effective they must go through training courses and they need to know the standards.
The driving standards agency also known as the DSA is set up for the standards and training for all
the different emergency response teams, such as ambulance, fire and rescue, police service and
more. The standards of the DSA are having the response teams to be able to drive effectively and
safety to an incident. Also to show the correct behaviour to the emergency’s that may occur. Every
response driver has to go through a driver trainer course, this is because the drivers are required to
have outstanding driving skills to allow them to get to their locations effectively when using the blue
lights. They will go through different stages in the courses such as awareness or high speed driving.
This driving course will train individuals to drive effectively with the blue lights and make them more
aware of the different risks that they can encounter on the roads. The awareness course will be
suitable for every single emergency service (ambulance, police, fire and rescue). Another course the
drivers will have to go through are high speed driving. This will train the drivers to drive effectively at
high speeds. This is very important to the police services as they need to travel at high speeds when
in chase. Before any personnel gets in a response vehicle, they must have had their driving course.
PUBLIC PERCEPTION OF EMERGENCY REPSONSE DRIVERS
All emergency vehicles have to obey to the normal laws like everyone else when their blue lights and
sirens are not on. As soon as the emergency vehicle switches on the blue lights and sirens they have
priority on the road. This allows the response team to get to their location faster. When any civilian is
driving and hears/sees a blue light service coming their way, they are required to move out the way
quickly and as safe as possible to allow the services to get pasted easier. Most of the public will get
out of the way instantly allowing the services to get past. When the public move off the road, it
allows the public services to get to where they are needed more effectively as they are not needed to
stop for traffic most of the time.

The driver of the emergency response vehicle has a lot of responsibilities on them and they are
accountability for whatever happens during the time they are driving. The public services train all
