M1 – Analyse the recruitment documentation of a selected organisation

Recruitment and retention of staff – Within a business recruitment and retention of staff is
important and can present many advantages to the company itself. An example of an
advantage of recruitment and retention of staff is supplying valuable staff members with
various benefits of staying with the company; such as competitive pays with other business’
in the same industry, benefits as well as identifying employees with outstanding work effort
and giving those employees recognition for their continued involvement with the company.

Sainsbury’s may reward their employees with a pay rise or even a certificate for outstanding
work ethic. Sainsbury’s uses various methods to recruit new staff members, an example of a
method that Sainsbury’s use in order recruit is using posters around the store as well as
advertisements (on billboards). Sainsbury’s also uses various methods in order to keep
valuable staff members such as incentives to stay. An example that Sainsbury’s uses is that
‘60%’ of their staff are female, therefore the company has very flexible working standards as
well as well paid maternity leave which is a great incentive for women who are in want of a
family with their partner.

A disadvantage of recruitment and retention of staff is that all of the extra benefits that the
good employees will be given in order to stay with the experienced employees are being
given to stay with the business. A suggested improvement for this would be to allocate a
budget to the recruitment and retention of staff, so that the company does not over spend,
on keeping their experience employees.

Contracts of employment – There are many
advantages of having contracts of
employment with an employee as, one
being that the employees the benefit the
business most can be offered a contract of
employment with a specific contract length
which means they have to stay for that
duration of time. However the employer can
also add terms into that contract such as a
notice clause if they were ever to leave this
can be anywhere from a week to 90 days. A
notice clause ensures the employer has
enough time train another employee to
replace the employee that is leaving, as the
employee leaving must work at that
company until the end of that notice clause.
Within the colleague, benefits there are
descriptions of what Sainsbury’s does for its
employees as part of their contracts of
employment. One example being the
‘Employee Assistant Programme’, which
helps employees with various needs such as
advice or short counselling sessions for their employees.

, A disadvantage of contracts of employment is that there is not a lot of flexibility on the
employee contract. This means that any changes made to the employee’s contract and
would have to renegotiate with that employee as the terms have already been stated for
their current contract. Another disadvantage of the contract of employment is that although
you receive many benefits from the company the company also receives a lot benefits from
your contract such as being able to keep you for a particular about of time before you can
leave. In other words giving notice before you leave the job as sometimes this can be up to 6
months prior. A suggested improvement for the business is to ensure they have some
flexibility with the contract with the employee to ensure that if a change needs to be made
they have the power to do so.

Resource requirements – If a business states its requirements needed to carry out a
particular job role it means that the resources required are sufficiently enough for that job
to be done correctly. This can also add restraints into the amount of resources that are given
to the employees in order to carry out the job and they must use those particular resources
using the quantities needed. Consequently stating resource requirements and limits can
cause a business to run at a much higher efficiency as the company has determined the
correct amount of resources needed at the cheapest price to get the job done, whereas
otherwise unnecessary resources may be used to carry out the job, which may cost more
money making the business inefficient. This is useful for Sainsbury’s has it ensures they do
not order too much of one resource causing a loss of profit.

A disadvantage of resource requirements is technology advancing very fast. The company
has to ensure their technology is up to date to stay with their competition in terms of having
the more efficient resources for their business. A suggest improvement for this disadvantage
is to ensure when the company is buying new resources that the resources are future proof;
meaning the equipment they buy will last a long time in terms of newer technology coming
out.

Relationships with other departments – Most businesses that have multiple departments
are all connected within a company but carry out various different jobs roles. Having a
strong relationship with another department has many advantages one of them being that
the efficiency will be very high as each department will have good communication allowing a
strong work flow, hence a greater profit for the company. Sainsbury’s can use this to their
advantage, as a strong communication between departments will result in a higher
efficiency allowing the company to rise in the retail industry.
