Unit 6 – Preparing for Employment
P1 – Describe the career opportunities within different industries in the travel and tourism sector

P2 - describe the roles and responsibilities, entry requirements and progression routes for two jobs
in travel and tourism

In this assignment I will be describing career opportunities within 3 different industries in the travel and
tourism sector as part of P1. For P2 I will be describing the roles, and responsibilities, entry requirements
and progression routes required for a children’s representative and a retail travel agent.

Retail Agents: A retail agent’s role is to help plan, choose and arrange a customer’s holiday. They can also
offer advice and opinions on where to go on holiday and also advice about local attractions. Travel agents
were once the face of the travel and tourism industry as they sold package holidays from a brochure. Some
travel agents are vertically integrated with tour operators, which mean the tour operator owns them. For
example the tour operators Thomas Cook have their own retail agents on the high street. Most travel
agents are based in branches on the high street, although some agents do work in call centres. Travel
agents can be categorized in several ways with the usual distinction being drawn on the basis of size:

 Multinationals with offices worldwide: Thomas Cook

 National multiples with offices throughout a country: Co-op Travel

 Regional multiples or miniple’s with a number of offices but concentrated in one region of a
country: Miles Morgan Travel

 Independents with anything from one to a handful of outlets: D K Travel.

There is plenty of room for progression working as a retail agent. Travel agents starting out can expect to
earn around £12k but working hard and getting some experience goes a long way in this business and
more seasoned travel agents can earn anything up to £30k. First of all you will start off as a Trainee
Consultant, and then you will advance to a Senior
Consultant. It is the Senior Consultants job to train and tell
the Trainee Consultant what to do. A Senior Consultant will
then advance to a Travel Shop Manager which means
they will manage the shop they work in. And then finally the
highest route of progression is become an Area manager
where you will manage all of the branches in the area.

Airlines: Cabin Crew is a very popular job in the travel and
tourism sector. You can be cabin crew for a range of
popular airlines such as British Airways, Virgin Atlantic, EasyJet and many others. Cabin Crew or flight
attendants look after the passengers on board the aircraft when they are travelling for leisure or business
purposes. They have to ensure that they provide excellent customer service so the customer has an overall
good experience. Cabin crew will come around the trolleys and sell food and drink. They also sell duty free
and inform the customers about health and safety procedures. They also have to prepare for emergency
situations.

There are many opportunities to progress your career once you are a member of cabin crew, and have
clocked up some flying time with one or more airlines. For many the role of cabin crew supervisor is a
welcome step up, taking you into a team management position and giving scope for a higher annual salary.
If you’ve enjoyed your career as a member of cabin crew supervisor and are looking for a little more
responsibility while still having fun in your job, then it may be time to apply for a senior cabin crew
position.

Accommodation: There are many different types of accommodation tourists can stay in during their
holiday for example you can have Bed & Breakfast, Backpacker Hostel, Guest House, Hotel, Lodge, Resort
and self-catering depending on your budget, holidays and personal likes.
Accommodation is such key part in the private sector because where ever you go you will always need
somewhere to sleep while travelling. Most people wouldn’t go straight into management they would start
at the accommodation as a cleaner or a cook or a receptionist and then work up but normally career
development may include either moving to a larger or more prestigious hotel in another part of the
country or going abroad to gain more experience. Self-employment is another way to progress according to
your own priorities.
