Source Evaluation on Criminal deterrence: A review of the literature In my research project, I will be showing that capital punishment ends up consuming taxpayers’ money and does not deter homicide crimes. My research topic was inspired by the conventionally perceived rationale for capital punishment as a deterrence of homicides crimes. When searching for sources, I came across an article titled, Criminal deterrence: A review of the literature. The research study was conducted by Aaron Chalfin and Justin McCrary in 2017. I obtained the article on Google Scholar. Chalfin is a professor at the University of Pennsylvania. He has much interest and knowledge in research on criminology. McCrary is from the University of California and has great research interest in Law and Economics. Upon a close evaluation of the research paper and its content, I found the article to be credible and reable. First, it is peer-reviewed. Secondly, the paper provides facts rather than opinions. The article is written by authors who scholars in the field of criminology. Furthermore, the article has explored more than 200 existing literature on the issue of capital punishment and deterrence. The sources are authentic and reliable making the article credible. The facts in these sources are well connected to produce a substantive paper. Notably, this article has been cited by over a hundred other articles. Therefore, the article is credible and valid to be used in my research project. I find this article useful as far as my research is concerned. The purpose of the article is to review the economics research with regard to the effect of capital punishment on the rate of crimes, particularly focusing on papers from the last 20 years. The numerous sources evaluated in the article helps it to come up with a valid conclusion. From the analysis and conclusions made, it is clear that capital punishment does not reduce the rate of crimes. Furthermore, the paper incorporates the Theory of Deterrence pretty well. The Theory of Deterrence forms a theoretical framework for my research. It is clear that the information contained in the article will be paramount in helping me to prove my points that capital punishment is expensive to the taxpayer and that it does not have deterrence effects on homicide crimes.
