Religions give the idea that some questions may only be able to be answered by faith and that there is something greater such as a higher power that one must answer to. Religion is often viewed as something that is very personal and gives meaning to many individuals’ lives (CCN, 2018). Religions are viewed from etic and emic approaches. Etic is referred to as the outsider’s view. “This view attempts to evaluate a religious tradition from the perspective of what can be measured, studied, or observed.” (CCN, 2018). The outsider is one who is not attached to the observations or religion being observed but rather foreign to such religion (Tanui, 2012). An emic approach is the opposite. Emic is referred to as the insider’s view. This is how the religion is viewed by those involved. The religion that I have chosen to discuss is Catholicism. Although I don’t go to church on Sundays anymore, I still find my own time to pray. I would not consider myself to be “as religious” as others within my religion but I have made my Communion and Confirmation in the church. One topic I hear discussed more often than others is the idea of Catholics being polytheists rather than monotheists. Polytheism is the belief of many gods rather monotheism which is the belief in one God. It is said that Muslims interpret Catholics as polytheists because of the use of the phrase “the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit”(The Rapidian, 2017). On the other hand, the Roman Catholic Church states, “we firmly believe and confess without reservation that there is only one true God, eternal, infinite, and unchangeable, incomprehensible, almighty, and ineffable, the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, three persons indeed, but one essence, substance or nature entirely simple.” (The Rapidian, 2017). It may be difficult for others who do not practice the same religion to understand. I can understand where they may think that Catholics are truly polytheists rather than monotheists. Rather than feeling the way the a Catholic does in the sense that the Father the Son and the Holy Spirit are one rather than separate entities.
