Texas ethics commission ANS: has subpoena powers and can initiate their own investigations A.C.T: ANS: •Alternatives: identify all choices •Consequences: project outcomes •Tell your story: prepare defense Stakeholders: ANS: any person organization or entity that may be affected by what you do. Ethics check questions ANS: •Is it legal? Will it violate any laws? •Is it balanced? Is it fair to everyone? •How will I feel about myself? Will it withstand the public? "firm but fair" ANS: conduct, or humane treatment, effective communication, and problem or situation being resolved before turning into a major investigation. Jail climate ANS: is the prevailing behavioral atmosphere throughout the jail facility. The jail climate is affected by many factors including inmate game-playing, jail programs and inmate-staff relations. Reasons for inmate game playing: ANS: •Inactivity (boredom) •Position (information) •Status (rep) Indicators of inmate stress include: ANS: •Tenseness •Loss of appetite •Insomnia •Lethargy (lazy) •Persistent minor illnesses Three components of communication: ANS: •Verbal communication ("what I say") •Body language (How I show it) •Listening (the effect of the words selected) Attitude ANS: combo of personal knowledge and feelings about someone or something that influence behavior Race ANS: refers to groups of people with certain ancestry and shared characteristics Ethnicity ANS: refers to shared culture and background Ethnocentrism ANS: ones culture as the center and the basis for all comparisons Prejudice ANS: judgment formed beforehand Discrimination ANS: acting on the basis of prejudice Basic beliefs or attitudes harbored by prejudiced people: ANS: •Feeling of superiority •Others are strange or different •Proprietary claims •Fear Forms of prejudice: ANS: •Racial •Ethnic •Gender •National origin •Political affiliation •Authority figures •Sexual orientation •Physically/mentally challenged •Religious •Age •Economic/occupational/socioeconomic status •Weight •Individual personal preferences All people share common needs: ANS: social, health, employment, shelter, food and self image Individuals should be evaluated on their ANS: merit Display to avoid prejudice: ANS: •Sensitivity •Impartiality •Empathy •Tolerance U.S Code 241: ANS: Conspiracy against rights: 2 or more conspire to deny right, $10k fine, term of imprisonment not to exceed 10 years or if a death occurred, life sentence. Quid pro quo ANS: sexual act is precedent before a benefit Hostile work environment ANS: occurs when the conduct impedes performance USCA 1983: ANS: DON'T IMPEDE ON RIGHTS OF OTHERS Equal employment opportunity commission ANS: investigate sexual harassment allegations stress can cause ANS: impaired health, burnout, early retirement, and impaired family life/process the body undergoes when exposed to outside stimulus, in which the body's reaction is fight or flight Hans Selye ANS: the pioneer in stress research. Critical incident stress (CID) ANS: extraordinary occupational events that can cause exceptionally strong emotional reactions. Acute Stress Disorder (ASD) ANS: person has been exposed to a traumatic event in which both of the following were present: death, horror Individual has symptoms that last a minimum of 2 days and maximum of 4 weeks and occurs within 4 weeks of the incident.
