FIRST ADDITIONAL LANGUAGE

This paper consists of 4 pages.
Instructions:
You are allowed to access your study material. You are however not allowed to copy
verbatim from your study material. You should write the answers in your own words and
any sources consulted should be cited according to the Harvard referencing method. In the
case of plagiarism or cheating of any kind you will be reported to the University’s Student
Disciplinary Section.
The answered exam script must be uploaded as a PDF electronic document.

a) In a paragraph of not more than 10 lines, briefly discuss THREE ways in which
literary studies can help promote multicultural awareness among English FAL
learners. (10)
b) In your own words, briefly explain what you understand by the concept of
“reading and writing as symbiotic processes” and explain the implications this
has for language teaching. (10)
c) Is critical writing the same as criticism? Describe TWO ways in which the two
are similar OR different and give one suitable example to illustrate the
similarities OR differences between them. (10)
d) Read the poem below and answer the questions that follow:

Different

We are all born
in a different way
How we look
And what we say

From different countries
Around the world
Of different genders:
Boys and girls

Of many sizes
And colours too
The things we like
And the things we do

We are so glad
It works this way
The world is so colourful
Everyday

If everyone were the same

Pretend you have to teach the following poem to a group of Foundation/Intermediate
phase learners. Discuss ANY TWO multimodal response approaches you can use to
help learners engage with this poem. Your discussion should include the following:
An introductory paragraph in which you explain what multimodal response
approaches are/what they entail.

Two body paragraphs in which you discuss ANY TWO multimodal response
approaches you can use to help learners read and write about the poem. Your
discussion should include a brief description of the suitable approach, explanations of
why each approach you discuss would be relevant for your learners. Ensure that you

paragraph (One approach per paragraph).

A concluding paragraph in which you highlight the benefits of using multimodal
approaches to teach literary texts.
