Their preparation focuses on ALS assessment; diagnostic and treatment tools and techniques, such as interpretation of heart rhythms; advanced airway management ; and emergency pharmacology. Describe EMT licensure criteria; include how the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) applies to employment as an EMT. * High School diploma or equivalent * Proof of Immunization against certain communicable diseases * Successful completion of a background check and drug screening * Valid drivers license * Successful completion of a recognized health care provider basic life support(BLS) / cardiopulmonary resuscitation (Car) course * Successful completion of a state approved EMT course * Successful completion of a state - recognized written certification examination ( usually NREMT) * Successful completion of a state - recognized practical certification examination * Compliance with other state , local, and employer provisions The ADA of 1990 protects people who have a disability from being denied access to programs and services that are provided by state or local governments and prohibits employers from failing to provide full and equal employment to the disabled. In addition, Title I of the Ada protects EMTs with disabilities seeking gainful employment under many circumstances. Employers with a certain number of employees are required to a just process so that a candidate with a disability can be considered for the position , and when possible , modify the work environment or how the job is normally performed. This allows EMTs who can perform the functional job skills with reasonable;e accommodations the opportunity to pursue a career in EMS. Discuss the historical background of the development of the EMS system History of EMS * Origins Include - Volunteer ambulances in WW1 - Field care in WW1 -Field medic and rapid helicopter evacuation in Korean conflict * 1966 - EMTs as we know today, Accidental Death and Disability: Tye neglected Disease of Modern Society established EMS * Early 1970s - DOT published the first EMT training curriculum *1971 - AAOS published " The orange book'' * National Standardization efforts - 1970s - Dots National standard curriculum - 1980s - Advanced levels of EMTs 1990s- NHSTA's EMS agenda for the future Describe The levels of EMT training interms of sets of knowledge , skills and attitudes needed for each of the following : EMR, EMT, AEMT, and Paramedic. 1. EMR : provides basic immediate care including bleeding control, CPR, AED, and Emergency Childbirth 2. EMT : includes all EMR skills, advanced oxygen and ventilation skills, pulse oximetry , noninvasive BP monitoring, and administration of certain medications. 3. AEMT : includes all EMT skills, advanced airway devices, IV and IO access, blood glucose monitoring, and administration of additional medications. 4. Paramedic : includes all preceding training levels, advanced assessment and management skills, various invasive skills, and extensive pharmacology interventions. Recognize the presence of other first responders at a scene with EMS training, some knowledge of first aid, or merely good intentions and their need for direction. At scenes we will encounter good smartens trained in first aid and CPR, physicians and nurses, and other well meaning individuals. Identifying and using them properly can create valuable assistance at times, and other times these people may create problems or extra danger. Explain the guiding principles of EMS Agenda 2050 Is a multidisciplinary , national review of all aspects of EMS delivery. The goal is to develop a more cohesive and consistent system across the county. Protocols are described as the EMTs scope of practice, the standing orders are part of protocol and designate what the EMT is required to do. The medical director is the liaison between the medical community, hospitals, and the EMTs in service.If treatment problems arise it is referred to the medical director to make the final decision in action. The medical director overseas QI by approved CEUs and EMT training. Online medical direction is the direct contact between the physician and EMT via phone and radio.
