, Inleiding
For our profile assignment, we have chosen the subject 'criminal behaviour and migration',
because we want to know what influence migration has on crime. In particular we will be
looking at the Syrian migration process.
Right now, in 2016, there is a lot of fuss about the arrival of refugees. In 2015 58.880
refugees did an application for asylum in the Netherlands. 27.710 of those applications are
from Syrian refugees. A lot of people think refugees have a bad influence on the Dutch
society, they think the refugees are persistent offenders, rapists, scammers, terrorists etc.
We want to investigate if this is true, we want to look at the migration process from Syria to
the Netherlands from the beginning (starting from the situation they are fleeing from) to the
end (when the refugees have the Dutch citizenship). We want to look at the psychological
state of Syrian refugees, their motivation to migrate to the Netherlands, the differences in our
Dutch culture and laws versus the Syrian culture and laws and what the asylum centre does
to dispute criminal behaviour.
Our main question is;
To what extend are Syrian refugees bringing crime into the Netherlands in comparison with
the Dutch.
Our sub-questions are;
• How do different law systems of the Netherlands and Syria contribute to criminality
amongst Syrian refugees?
• What influence do psychological problems have on criminality amongst Syrian
refugees?
• Which social position did the Syrian refugees have before they fled Syria and which
social position will they have in the future?
• What kind of offences do Syrian refugees commit?
It is difficult to find correct information about criminality amongst Syrians, so have to be very
precise about every information we find, what is true and what isn't?
