Assignment 1 – Path analysis I
In this first assignment, we will analyze a data file that is made available by dr. J. Braeken. It
contains a simulated dataset based on the article “The effects of trust in physician on self-
efficacy, adherence and diabetes outcomes” that reports a study on the connection between the
trust in one’s own physician and health in diabetic patients.
You will conduct a path analysis of the following model:
The variables in the data file are:
Y1 Trust in ones physician
Y2 Self-Efficacy
Y3 Outcome Expectations
Y4 Adherence
Y5 Self-rated health
Y6 Objective health
1. The path model you will analyse represents a theory that is described in the article:

Briefly describe the theory that makes up the conceptual model (see information button).
- Trust in relatie tot objectieve- en zelf-beoordeelde gezondheid
o This study tested a theoretical model of variables influencing the
relations of trust to both objective and self-rated health

- Trust positief effect op self-efficacy en outcome expectations
- Self-efficacy en outcome expectations positief effect op treatment adherence en
objective health outcomes
- Trust positief effect op self-rated health, via self-efficacy
o We hypothesized that patients who trust their physicians more were
likely to have stronger self-efficacy and outcome expectations. We
expected this, in turn, to be associated with better treatment
adherence and objective health outcomes. In addition, we
hypothesized that highly trusting patients would be more likely to
report better health status
through enhanced self-
efficacy
2. You can use regression analysis in SPSS to estimate the path coefficients (regression
coefficients) of the model. To do so, you need to divide the path model into separate
regression equations.
How many regression equations do you need to estimate all path coefficients of the
model?
