Point of View by Gabeba Baderoon In the kitchen she reaches for the nutmeg grater and remembers it is in another cupboard, another place. In the post office she fills in the address she has left behind. She tears up the form and starts again. Her mail follows her like outstretched hands. In your opinion, how does this use of punctuation affect the ideas being expressed by the poet? (5) • Remember that punctuation is a very effective way to create movement or add emotion to a poem as it slows down, speeds up, stops or allows lines to flow into one another. This poem is in free verse so there is no rhyme per se, so the punctuation is used to create different effects. Part 2 QUESTION 2: NOVEL: Small Things – Nthikeng Mohlele This question requires you to write an essay of no more than 600 words. In answering the question, ensure that your essay includes the following: • An introductory paragraph that introduces the topic and explains how the rest of your essay will be structured. • A body of 3-5 paragraphs, in which you develop your argument. • A concluding paragraph, in which you sum up your argument. • In-text citations and a reference list, including the novel and any other sources you may have consulted. Carefully read the extract below, then answer the question that follows. Major Joubert came back at the crack of dawn, with more news from home: Bra Todd had died. He endured broken ribs and blue eyes, retelling the same truth: that he never had discussed any revolution with me. That our late-night sessions at the newsroom were of a personal nature. Nothing more. He was dragged out of the newsroom to undisclosed locations, beaten to a pulp. Mauled by police hounds. Submerged under water. Electrocuted. Yanked by the testicles. A similar fate, said Major Joubert, awaited me. ‘Stop this obsession with martyrdom. Just tell the truth. Who are your accomplices? No man is an island. Don’t be a martyr. For what? To get a hospital, an orphanage named after you? Turn state witness. Tell me something. Anything. Don’t be a hero. Then we set you free. It is that simple. Silence is dangerous in our world.’ Yet I chose silence. Served my time, every bruising millisecond, threats of imminent hanging ringing in my ears (Mohlele, 2013:22). In Nthikeng Mohlele’s Small Things, a series of injustices is perpetrated against the narrator. Despite this, he refuses to take action. Using the extract above as a starting point, write an essay in which you discuss the theme of injustice as portrayed in the novel.
