This is a detailed summary of all 12 books of Virgil's Aeneid. Perfect for revising the poem for Mods at Oxford or for other exams. It enabled me to get a First Class mark in my exam.

Book 1 - Storm and arrival in Carthage
• Proem 1-12
• Juno loves Carthage, Juno still annoyed about Paris and also Gannymede so she keeps the
Trojans far away from Latium. Soliloquy where she talks about how Athene was allowed to kill
the Greeks but she can’t do anything 12-50
• Juno’s visit to Aeolus; she asks for him to drive Aeneas’ fleet in exchange for a nymph as a wife.
Aeolus agrees and the winds come out of the mountain and shipwreck of Aeneas’ ships: Syrtes,
whirlpool etc. 100-120
• Neptune’s intervention (he recognises what Juno has done). He calls the East and West wind
and tells them to disperse. 120-150
• Trojan arrival in Carthage, description of the place (forest, cliff, etc), Achates makes fire, Aeneas
hunts of 7 stags (1/ship). He tells them to summon their courage, they eat and regain their
strength whilst talking about their missing companions. 150-220.
• Venus’ complaints to Jupiter about Italy being shut off to the Trojans even following sack of Troy
(Antenor already settled) and his assurance/prophecy that Aeneas will rule for 3 years and
Ascanius for 30, there will be Caesar and war will be closed off. He then sends Mercury to
soften Punics especially Dido. 220-300
• Aeneas and Achates’ encounter with Venus in forest. They cannot sleep and as soon as
morning comes they investigate where they have landed. Venus in disguise as a Spartan
maiden history of Dido’s escape from Tyre; Sychaeus appeared in a dream and told her to
escape from Tyre after her brother Pygmalion killed him. Aeneas, in turn relates his story briefly.
V shows him an omen of 12 swans to prove his comrades are not dead, she tells him to follow
the road. Aeneas angry that V never reveals herself to him properly. 300-410
• Pair’s entrance into Carthage in a cloud, (they see from a hill all the C’s busy like bees). Temple
being built for Juno in a sacred grove, Trojan scenes on walls. Dido Enters, 410-500
• Dido is like Diana; she is giving laws when suddenly the companions appear; A longs to break
from the cloud but he doesn’t. Iloneus explains they were going to Hesperia when blown off
course—he asks that they be allowed to make new ships. Dido says no worries and she has
already heard of the Trojan plight. 500-580
• Cloud bursts and they reunite. A addresses the queen thanking her and asking the gods to
repay her. D is amazed and tells how she knows about ill fortune and how Teucer told her about
him. 580-630
• They go into the palace and there is feasting. A sends for Ascanius and some gifts. 630-650
• Venus’ plan with Cupid to inflame Dido with love (she suspects the duplicitous Punics and the
plans of Juno). Cupi was is escorted in by Achates and they feast. Dido dandles him on her lap.
650-720
• After the feast, libations and Iopas’ song; Dido wants to hear Aeneas’ story
Book 2 - Fall of Troy
• Aeneas can barely bear to relate his sufferings 1-12
• Greeks left for Tenedos after building a wooden horse; people rejoice but Capys does not trust
it. Laocoön thinks the Greeks are hiding in it and spearthrow (12-60)
• Sinon’s entry being dragged by some shepherds. He says he is hated by all and relates how he
was the comrade of Palamedes who died. Odysseus hounds him; The Greeks have wanted to
leave for ages but winds stopped them even after they’d build the horse. Eurypylus consults
the oracle and says there must be a sacrifice. (60-120)
• Calchas’ advice (influenced by Od) to kill Sinon; escape from prison; Trojans decide to spare
him (120-140)
• Explains need to look after and bring in wooden horse, it was an atonement for stealing the
Palladium to Minerva, punishment for those who don’t (140-200)
• Laocoön and his children die, horse brought in (4x it halted on threshold) (200-250)
• Sinon releases Greeks at night after feasting, ghost of Hector appears to Aeneas telling him to
escape with the gods (250-300)
• Aeneas sees the Greeks from the rooftop and meets Pantheus and arms. They meet some
other Trojans and fight together, rousing speech, like wolves (300-370)
• Androgeos thinks he is among Greeks - Trojans take Greek armour (370-400)
• Coroebus charges to save Cassandra, Trojans killed by friendly fire; Greeks overwhelm them
and they are swept along. (400-450)
• The Trojans are tearing down towers; through a secret passage Aeneas goes to help and
topples a tower. Neoptolemus aristeia and smashes through to passage (450-500)

• Priam arms himself, against Hecuba’s will, Polites dies before father, Neoptolemus kills Priam
(500-560)
• Aeneas’ thought to kill Helen, Venus’ intervention and removal of mist (560-630)
• Return to house, reluctance of Priam, Aeneas upset, Creusa begs to take her with him, flame
from Ascanius + shooting star, departure. (630-700)
• Tells slaves to meet at temple of Ceres, they go anxiously, Loss of Creusa, retracing steps,
Creusa’s ghost tells them to settle on Tiber, congregation outside Troy (700-800).

Book 3 - Thrace, Crete, Chaonia, Sicily
• Reach Thrace, Polydorus as a tree - sent to Thrace by Priam - killed by spears by King of
Thrace. They give P a second burial and then leave. (1-70)
• Arrive in Delos; go to temple of Apollo and everything shakes, prophecy comes from Apollo—
seek out your ancient mother. Anchises interprets Apollo’s oracle as needing to go to Crete
(origin of Trojans - Teucer?). So they go to Crete which they hear has been abandoned by
Idomeneus. (70-140)
• Plague and drought in Crete - household gods in a dream tell him to go to Italy. A tells his father
who recalls Cassandra saying the same. They leave a few behind and sail on. (140-190).
• 3 day storm, reach island of Harpies, the strophades, - defile food
• Celaeno prophesies reaching Italy but they will not be allowed to build walls before there is a
famine and an eating of tables.
• Anchises asks the gods to not let this happen and they leave. (190-260)
• They go to the land of Mt Leucas and have some games, dedication of armour of Abas. Then
they leave. (260-290)
• Reach Chaonia (Helenus’ and Andromache’s land), created mini-Troy which is called
Buthrotum. Andromache is astounded and tells of her lot as having to be a slave but then
Orestes killed Pyrrhus. Helenus gets some of the kingdom and marries A. (290-350)
• Helenus arrives and they enjoy the town. After a few days, prophecy of having to go to the
underworld and when he sees a sow with 30 white piglets to signify Ascanius’ 30 year reign, he
must found the city there. Don’t worry about eating tables. Always keep the mode of sacrifice
of covering head in purple cloth safe. Take the long way round Sicily to avoid S and C. Pray to
Juno, when you come to Cumae get advice from the Sibyl. Gifts. (350-470)
• The priest of Apollo says to Anchises he must go to Ausonia; Andromache gives gifts. Aeneas
promises to make the two peoples one some day. They leave. (470-510)
• Achates sees Italy, fresh breeze, land on a shore where there are 4 horses cropping grass.
Omen of war and peace, They leave after making a prayer to Juno. (510-550)
• They leave, avoid Scylla and C but get lost and arrive in the land of the Cyclopes. Story of
Enceladus under Mt Etna. In the morning, see Achaemenides, tells his story, they blinded the
Cyclops but Ulysses forgot him and left him there. They rescue him and leave. See Polyphemus
and the other Cyclopes. They leave (550-680)
• Sail past S and C, worship gods at Ortygia, round cape Pachynus, past Selinus and land at
Drepanum where Anchises dies. Then they get to Carthage.

Book 4 - Dido’s ‘marriage’ and suicide
• Dido’s confession of love to Anna and guilt of Sychaeus (1-30)
• Anna’s recommendation to forget Sychaeus + political benefits and also the love of marriage.
Dido’s prayers, the flame, showing Aeneas around, stories at night. Works standing idle. (30-90)
• Juno: let’s stop fighting and have a marriage, Venus: okay but ask Jupiter. Juno: get them in a
cave. (90-130)
• They go hunting, A like Apollo, trapped in a cave, marriage (130-170)
• Dido proclaims marriage, Iarbas gets Rumour and complains to Jupiter. (170-220)
• Mercury is sent to accost Aeneas, flight of Mercury, - reminded of Ascanius and empire
(220-290)
• Aeneas prepares fleet, Dido confronts him and talks about pledge etc. Aeneas replies that she
has helped but he has to go. Dido: you are a traitor, not overcome by my sadness, I shall follow
you in my death. (290-390)
• Dido leaves, Trojans busy, Dido watching. (390-420)
• Dido tells Anna to encourage Aeneas to delay for better winds but he isn’t persuaded. Dido
prays for death, water blackens at Dido’s altars, wine turns to blood. (420-470)
• Dido asks Anna to prepare pyre because of the Messylian lady. Anna agrees with no idea what
is going on, Dido prepares Aeneas’ stuff and calls to the gods. (470-520)
