Unit 9: Assignment 1 - Turing Systems
Scenario
Turing Systems is a medium-sized organisation. We specialise in writing software for various
purposes and organisations. I have just been recently employed as a network technician by
Turing systems. My job description includes training of new staff, installing/setting up new
networks and maintaining and upgrading existing ones. Turing systems engineers write
software drivers for network cards and other network management utilities. We sell our
software on world markets and thus our software developers must be highly informed
about networking.

Describe the types of networks available and how they relate to particular
network standards (P1)
Network Types
Wide area network - This network is used extensive organizations around the world.
Because using wide area network is so we can at ease connect to the local area network
which is small network hence makes the big network connection. The standard is IEEE
802.20 global system for mobile communications. Other associated technologies to this are
frame relay, ATM, SONET/SDH, X.25, and PPP. Frame relay is the most used protocol for
wide area network. Benefits are messages will be sent quickly to any other individual on the
system. These messages can have sound, pictures or information included with them.
Furthermore, is they being able to share files and information over a larger network. Lastly
is that if they buy something expense like a peripheral all the computers can use it, so all the
computers don’t need separate ones they can all share it. A limitation is security it's
enormous issue when heaps of various people can utilize data from different PCs; the
assurance against infections and hackers includes more cost and intricacy. Furthermore, the
larger the network the more money it will cost. Lastly it’s vulnerable to hackers and all the
other outside threats.
Local area network - This provisions networking abilities to a gathering of PCs, which are
connected to other PCs. In colleges, schools and additional buildings. Local area network is
coming in use to them specifically for sharing the files, resources, games, printers and the
other applications. The standard is IEEE 802.11 for WIFI. Other associated technologies are
Gigabit Ethernet, token ring and FDDI. Gigabit Ethernet is the usually the most used protocol
for local area network. Benefits are back-ups may happen automatically from time to time
that individual may normally be able to get work that has been erased coincidentally.
Furthermore, local emails might be emailed to individuals working at different PCs on the
network. Henceforth it will spare time and makes sure that emails go to the place they
should go. Lastly because of central backing a user may load their work on any computer
they log into. Limitations are network security, a virus can get into one computer and can
spread to the central backing store and hence then infects all computers. Furthermore, if file
server fails, work on hard disk drives cannot be accessed and they won’t be able to use
network printers as well. Lastly when a lot of computers are using only one or two
peripherals, a bunch of printing will line up, making them have to wait for their documents
to print out. The topology normally used for Gigabit Ethernet is star topology.
