As part of this report I have been exploring how Tesco motivates its employees to improve the
company performance and efficiency, so I will be describing what methods the company use to
satisfy and motivate their employees.

Tesco uses different ways and methods to satisfy and motivate their employees, they give to them
different benefits that beneficiate them and make them complete and perform their job activities
with more efficiency and effectiveness, Tesco uses different rewards and benefits according to the
job position and level of the employee. There are other methods that encourage employees to work
and do their job activities, for these methods are 4 different theories given by 4 different theorists
that studied what motivates people to work and perform the tasks that they are required to do and
behave as they do.

The first theorist and its theory was, F.W. Taylor he was an American engineer born in 1856 and
deceased in 1915 who invented work-study and founded the scientific approach to management. He
considered that money is the main factor that motivates workers, to perform their activities, Taylor
recommended extreme division of work, making workers work in the areas assigned for them and
don’t complete other tasks that are not made for them breaking a job into small repetitive tasks, this
generates higher efficacy and efficiency that will increase higher revenues and this higher profit, and
higher employees wage. This method had a big influence on mass production.

The second theorist and its theory was, Elton Mayo, he was an American born in 1880 and deceased
in 1949 he was a follower of F.W Taylor, but his experiments led him to conclude that scientific
management could not explain the importance of people’s behavior in the workplace, he concluded
that workplace conditions are so important for employees and it helps the many employees to
perform with more efficiency and effectiveness their tasks and actives, for example Mayo tried to
measure the productivity impact improving the lighting condition in the western electric factory, so
he can conclude that workplace conditions are essential in the functionality and performance of a
company.

The third theorist and its theory was Abraham Maslow, he was an American born in 1908 and
deceased 1970 he was psychologist whose work on human needs has had a major influence on
management thinking, his hierarchy of needs suggest that people has similar types of need form low
new basic to the need for achievement, so by this Maslow concludes that people climb over this
pyramid to obtain diverse needs that every person wants to obtain and earn, from the bottom of the
pyramid we can see:

 physiological needs such as food, clothes and shelter, this need is acquired and obtained by a
reasonable work with reasonable work conditions, that bring economical support to a person in
order to survive and subsist in society

 Safety needs such as a secure job, safe house and safe working environment that brings
protection, security y tranquility to the person

 Social needs such as friendship, love, team work, these need is essential because the person
wants to be accepted in society, so this plays an essential role in the hierarchy of needs because
it gives confidence to people and makes them move on in their lives and careers.
